I have often thought about and wondered how many of the tanks we work on have been bought and given to kids as presents, and then due to a broken track or burned out board are just now setting on a storrage shelf. Most people would not have a clue that these can be repaired,if they knew how to find the parts.(for the average person parts are not easy to find) I bought one of my 1/12 abrams from a friend of my wife, who's son was selling it in a yard sale for $20.00 dollars. That was the case of this tank it had a burned out board and had been setting on a shelf for months. My wife happened to be visiting her friend when the sale was in progress and called me to let me know about the tank,My reply of course was "buy it".It is now one of the one's I upgraded, was in perfect condition other than the burned out board. There has got to be many good buys or even free tanks if you can find them.
Very true. I got into HL tanks 3+1/2 years ago, buying the old 2-speed Tiger for a 'bargain' £65 or so inc P+P. Later I bid on a Pantiger - I didn't know how bad a model it was - then emailed the seller to see if he had any broken ones. He replied that he did and would sell me 3 for the price of the one in perfect condition. He lived about 30 miles away so I drove over to see him and pick up the three tanks.
I repaired them fairly easily and sold them to friends and colleagues for about £5/10 more than I paid. I then emailed the guy again and got another 10 off him!! I repaired most of these, sold them to friends and colleagues again, and kept a few for spares.
Later that year the cheap shop near where I work had HL Tigers in before Xmas for £50. Just before Xmas and just after they were £25. A few weeks after they cordoned off an area at the back of the shop. Peeking past the curtain I saw _piles_ of returned and broken RC toys that they had had to exchange after Xmas. As you can expect with HL's early quality-control issues there were _lots_ of HL Tigers there!!
I did briefly consider offering to buy the lot for a song, but decided against it! Having repaired ~20 of the buggers in the first 6 months I had had enough!
