The value of a fuse

Post by Marc780 »

When I rewired my HL King tiger, I added a 5 amp fuse, between the power hot lead and the power connector to the board (its a 2.4 Ghz board now, even more expensive then the RX18). Its shown by white arrow in the image.
I split the power connector from the switch, one lead goes to the 25mm fan glued to the circuit board box and is not fused. The other goes to the power to the circuit board and simply has two female solderless connectors, that i attach to a 5 amp fuse. I had a fuse holder to install for it, but decided it is way too bulky and big to fit inside the hull with all the other bits! So since i could just do without the fuse holder, i left it out. And just attach the female connectors straight to the fuse.

There is some discussion on whether to use a 5 amp fuse, a 7.5 amp, or no fuse at all. Count me with the 5 amp proponents, because I've blown a fuse twice so far, and each time you could hear the motors straining and see the tank slowing down as it was laboring over whatever obstacle-deep grass, decorative wood chips they throw around the trees in some places etc. I'd aimed it at. To me it seemed the tank was giving all the power and torque it had and if the cheap fuse hadn't blown under the load, something more costly would have.
For the stock motors and battery I'll stick with 5 amp for those good reasons.

Some people say to add a fuse, some people say its not needed. I joined the former today because of something that happened, a quick story i was outside driving the king tiger and thought i'd try it in the dirt-its a tank right? So i did this for a couple minutes. Then the treads jammed at the idler wheel, from getting a bunch of dirt and twigs tracked into it. I cleaned off the dirt out of the tracks, but the tank would no longer respond, no go! You can guess where i'm going with this. The tank did not respond to the Tx but i could hear the fan still going on the circuit board box so i know its getting power (from the circuit that's not fused). I had forgotten i added the fuse-which had indeed simply blown from getting the track stuck! And i guess, over-loading the amps getting drawn from the board. As soon as i remembered i simply changed the fuse and yes, working again.

No one will have to tell me twice about the value of a fuse...better a blown fuse then a $40 circuit board, or something else.
I keep a spare fuse taped inside the tank hull now.
