Tanks in War Thunder !

Post by doc larsson »

to those of you that don't know War Thunder (WT), is a flight sim game. Well, they just released the tank aspect as well ! Just been playing WT in a jagdpanther and must say graphics/detail is great. You can even detail/camo your own tank !! Which got me thinking ??? What a great tool to use before you embark on the proper painting of your tank ? Also the sounds for each tank are great (ahem copyrights). the game plays and looks a lot better imo than WoT but i am now biased !

enjoy !

One thing I really don't like in WT is the spotting system. Yeah the one in WoT is far from ideal, but it's fair, whereas WT's isn't.

Let me explain ...

In WoT the server determines what you can and can't see, based on some simple and understandable rules. In WT what you can and can't see is dependent on your graphics setting - turn off foliage and lower your graphics settings, and you'll be able to see enemy tanks earlier; run in higher resolutions and you'll be able to see enemy tanks earlier.

So in WoT everyone has the same spotting, whereas in WT people with great computers running at very low details settings will have a distinct advantage over people playing on older / weaker machines and / or running at higher settings. And while WT at full graphics looks absolutely amazing, at lowered graphics settings it looks like crap.

I'm also not a fan of how in arcade mode the tanks look and feel a bit like they're ice skaters rather than massive armored tracked beasts.

Don't play arcade mode then. I'm my opinion they've messed up big time by not adding a proper gun sight view with the proper retical. They've done so much right like the gfx, damage model etc but then they spoil it with the arcadey fps HUD, even on realistic and sim. If they sort this then they have my money.

That leaves the spotting system, which blatantly favors rich people who don't care if they play a game which looks like crap.

Its apples and oranges. Both games have allot of compromise but if you go in understanding neither is a proper simulation but games with a few flaws and limitations, I think you'll get allot more out of it. I think WT will get better in time though, its still early days. I'm hoping they put a proper simulation mode in one day as a rival to the new IL2 and the DCS sims.

See I think the whole idea of a "spotting system" is daft. The game should just render all tanks but none of this daft outlines like in WOT. Have you played wwiionline? It's a proper simulation, spotting is a real challenge and it's rewarding when you spot a tank that hast spotted you and cause him to brew up on your first hit.

I think for simulation mode at least they should go with something like the aircraft bit.

And it isn't 'daft' that people with larger resolutions who turn their graphics down have a measurable and competitive advantage over other people?

I'm not trying to argue that WoT's spotting system is perfect and flawless - far from. But at least it's fair for all players, regardless of computer specs or graphics settings.

It looks like you didn't read my post at all. I wasn't arguing the merits of either, I think both are daft

I did read your post. You argue that instead of a 'spotting system' all tanks should just be drawn if they're in LOS. It is like that in WT. However, that means that people who for example have foliage turned on won't see tanks that will see them if those players have foliage turned off.

So the problem isn't with spotting but with the fact you can turn off vegetation.....
