Lert's JagdPanther

Post by Lert »

Nothing to see yet, just a bone stock HL JagdPanther:

It's the S&S BB version. I'm planning to do it up in a similar way as I did my HL PzKpfw IV F2, but that's going to take a long, long time before it's that far. I just made this thread to have a place to collect my updates when they happen.

Some minor issues out of the box:

- The muzzle brake was rotated at a wrong angle. A screwdriver for some torque and a gentle turn later and it was on straight.
- One of the soft plastic tow cables snapped when I tried to fit it. That's ok though, I'm planning aftermarket metal tow cables because they look so much better.
- The JP pulls to the left slightly and the trim tab on the radio is either stuck or fake. I haven't opened the radio yet to check since I lack the right screwdriver. However, none of the trim tabs are movable, so I'm tempted to think they're fake. Which is weird, since the ones on the radio for my Pz IV work fine.

And ofcourse the known HL JP issues: the lower glacis plate is at the wrong angle, the mantlet is wrong, basic things like that.

All in all I'm very pleased with my purchase though, it's a really beautiful piece and looks very chunky next to my Pizzle IV.

The lower glacis is one of those take it or leave it things. To a large degree so is the mantlet. for me the mantlet was made worse by the LED installed, but I declined to address it because of a lack of insight. In this joint - there is insight, hindsight and pretty much every other sight to be 20/20.
The array of accessories you guys have available within a few days , and the benefit you can get from studying this and a few other forums can make your Jagd an object of engineering art....................a word of advice from the get-go. Change the gearboxes to steel before you do anything else if not done already.
These sleek hunters are really the epitomy of hunter/killer tank destroyers............Gun, armour, function, form, rare in numbers, even more rarely photographed in action , and with 2 enigmatic notable vehicle commanders that did their jobs well, if I had my time again with mine It would not have been a first build...................

This was my first effort into the sometimes seedy underbelly of the 1 1/16th world of RC tank building. !!!!!!!
I love the Jagd , and will do another as soon as time & space permit.
part of this disease we all share is the line up of 'next projects' we all seem to have.
For me another Jagd is number 6............

:haha: :haha: :haha: Read your other post Lert... You got it........... Excellent... the Jagd has sooooo many visual upgrades ... the first things I did was chop down the exhausts... put in some grills ... and add the spare links provided ...Stock the tracks are way too tight... I personally like to have a little sag in them...did you get the model with the metal gears... If not I would recommend epoxying the clutch gear ...and lube all the nylon bushings...these are good initial mods you can do without additional cost
Heng Long did a good job creating a foundation for an excellent build.... so just enjoy yourself

Compared to my PzKpfw IV this really is a far superior machine.

All I've done so far is open it up and lube the plastic gearboxes. I'll probably add a link to both tracks tonight when I'm done playing SCII, they really are a bit tight out of the box and having some sag looks so much better.

It's an unfortunate detail Heng Long missed on their German tanks... I think all of them the tracks are too tight... reason in most cases I opt for the mid range version when purchasing them...and getting metal aftermarket tracks later.... both my Jagd and Panther still have plastic tracks...they are thick enough so the pins don't come out with the flexing.... the Jagd's gearboxes died a very cool death...first the clutches would constantly overrun ... glued those... then the on the right side ... the axle got so hot it merged with the plastic bearing. :D ...so changed that to steel...the Panther has no problems so far...knock on wood... but all my Panzers suffered from track tightness the Panzer IIIs and Stug got tensioners to solve the issue... and my IV got extra links
Strange right... as my KV ..Shermans .. Pershings and such were all set perfect...never had to change a thing 8O

Glad to hear you are enjoying it Lert

Lert,
Good thread on an excellent piece of rolling History. HL has come a long way and the starting point for these builds is way beyond where it used to be. Enjoy and lots of pictures, please.

Ain't that the truth.

At first I was going to switch my order to the HL Tiger, but then I read up on what needs doing to make it even moderately accurate and I was like NOPE.

Lert,
Don't let old tooling keep you from having a Tiger 1. The newer HL's have been cleaned up as well and if you get a Taigen version with the Asiatam upper hull, it is years of advancement beyond the old 'cut up your upper hull to fix the turret location' days. Check it out sometime. You can even build your own metal versions now and set them up like you want from a kit. Early, all the way through to late, again, a Taigen offering. Enjoy this jagdpanther now, so much that can be done with it as well. These are amazing times for the Hobby.
