Desert Tiger 1

Post by tiger tiger »

Here is my latest project, not finished yet. I have yet to finish internal wiring. I have assembled it purely from bought parts, its a taigen hull metal reinforced with torsion bar suspension, metal taigen turret with ir,recoiling barrel and flash, metal toolset, metal lights/hatches/mg/grills. All metal running gear, tracks gears, wheels. Deck was shaved and hatches opened up. Wrong ariel tube and convoy light removed. The fiefel air cleaners were scratch built using bottom half of heng long ones and top half scratch built. I am using taigen 2.4 system rc yet to be finished. Painted in sand colour and some africakorp decals added to front which were from an action man helmet decal set. Ive got to add chains to air cleaners and get wiring sorted. Also added periscopes to hatches and added weld lines using milliput.Image

since last post i have got the bug to go further on the detail and purchased a voyager brass bits n bobs etc upper hull set, should be fun with my rubbish eyesight and unresponsive fingertips, also fitted some bearings to help drive shafts as thing is starting to get heavy, also to make it historically correct ive removed the Afrika korp decals and added a 501st stalking tiger pennant instead.

That is a nice example of an early Tiger 1, just one comment if I may, you have included the front access handle above the spare tracks which one far too rarely see's but it is not complete without the step attached to the spare track holder immediately below. By the way these were removed when they went to Russia after it was discovered that those Soviet soldiers would cheat and use them to climb on and put grenades through the vents and hatches, some people just will not fight fair!!! shaun
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Thanks for the positive feedback reaper and jarndice and also painless. Today i have added the chains to the feifel air cleaners and also the step to the front track bar. Also painted a metal bucket to add on to the kitty. Awaiting a turret rotation motor to arrive and fit to the deck , and then sort all the turret wiring, all lower wiring done eg the 2.4 taigen fan cooled module, motors, smoke unit, on/of switch, vol
adjuster. Will add more pics as and when.

Good looking tiger! You've inspired me to build my tamiya as a DAK example.

Hi

Hi

Not wanting to sound like a nit picker here but the Africa Korp did not use the Tiger I. The Tiger did fight in Tunisia but was used by the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion.

Does not stop it being a nice Tiger though and in reality you can build whatever you want as what-ifs seem to be very much in these days .

cheers

hi gorehound , yes 501 did use the tiger 1 in tunisia , i saw the image of King and countrys, strictly limited edition tunisian tiger 1 model on wikipedia images which seemed to show the afrikakorp emblem on the front of the tank. i wanted to build my own desert tiger 1 not just redo tiger 131 which has been done. i could change the aerial pennant to the stalking tiger pennant for better historical accuracy. The first consignment of tiger 1that they recieved had originally been consigned and prepared for erwin rommel but were then reassigned for 501 in tunisia

Absolutely Brilliant Tiger, I love it. Very much a clean looking example of my favorite Early version Tiger fresh off the assembly line. My first tank in the Hobby was very simular, and fun to construct although fewer resources.

The Air cleaners always were a problem for my as the early Asiatam Hulls opened with the back plate secured to the lower hull. Which I am sure is a problem you have as well, the tube either have to be removed or cut to fit flush at the elbows.

I did add the wiring for the smoke grenade launchers useing a black was coated string, which you might consider? Not at all being critical mate ,I really like your Tiger. Just clean and mean , Imagene being the proud crew unloading a new Tiger at the Height of the Tigers advantage on the battlefield. Wow. I modeled the Grossdeutschland S13 which I was able to find the History of its first months of service and some photos. Just possible you could find a similar Tiger record? Really would like to set both our Tiger together as mine is Grey. Would make a fine pair.

As for the History question, well maybe this will help

In March 1943 s.Pz.-Abt. 501 was succeeded by s.Pz.-Abt. 504. During the two months it operated in Tunisia before the surrender of all Axis troops in Tunisia, s.Pz.-Abt. 504 destroyed more than 150 enemy tanks and had a kill ratio of 18.8 enemy tanks for every Tiger lost.
