1941 KV-2A Research

Good Morning,
My next build is going to be a 41' KV-2A. I've been looking forward to this one and since I cannot begin the actual 'ordering' phase for another 30 days, ( Thanks, Sassgrunt for the metal, hinged storage boxes and the metal working exhausts. They are the first actual parts of the build. ;o) I am going to do a Research folder and place here all of the information I have found and will find to hopefully be of use to the next person that begins a build of this rare and amazing tank. To start out with, A couple of books:

Next up: Some color schemes on existing models of both the the stock Soviet tank and the German 'Capture' version. I plan on building the 'Capture' version but it is early days yet and paint on an armored vehicle is the easiest thing to change or leave alone in the case of the Wehrmacht using these vehicles in the Malta and Greece campaigns.

Next up: A 1/72 scale Unimax model I built last week and considered several paint schemes before going with the basic Soviet pea green with mud weathering. I painted, detailed and weathered this small version of the giant KV-2A in a marathon seven hour session yesterday (Sunday) The primer is Tamiya's excellent grey and the spray color was Testor's Bomber Green flat. This was as close as I could come to color images of this vehicle with it's standard paint applied. Normal shadowing was performed while the tank was in primer then a pin wash of 50\50 flat black and brush cleaner was applied after the initial spray. The tracks were brush painted in steel then this was followed up by weathering with mud from Tamiya's weathering kit. The figure was painted in Testors tan flesh with Tamiya acrylic Dk Green for the coveralls and Testor's flat khaki for the uniform shirt. A leather belt w\silver buckle and two tone ( Testors flat brown and leather ) tankers helmet completed the figure. The boots were left in molded black.

That's the way to do it. Small scale dry run before you jump in the 1/16. Looks like plenty of research material too!!!

Hi my good friend, still keeping warm and dry I hope, Are we in for another expose on the only true path to building armour? You have no idea of the pleasure I have gotten ( do you see what American English has done to my vocabulary?) from discovering that my hero has made a MISTAKE no no, I meant I think you might be in error sir, your second photo down of the KV2 capture in Panzer Grau, you have marked with a "BALTIC" cross, I expect that you have given the typing to one of your staff who not being aware of the complexities of German markings of WW11 thought that was what you meant! when we both know it is the Balkan cross ( Balken Kreuz ), oh the warm feeling of discovering that I actually know one thing your secretary didn't. I shall as ever be watching the progress of a challenge I think I would avoid, good luck when you can get going. take care Painless. shaun

It's an imposing build, not just from the size but from the speculation involved. There are lots of photos of the KV-2's exterior but shots of the turret's interior are almost nonexistent. Sassgrunt has a great reference Book that contains a ton of engineering drawings and copy from the vehicle's original build. Neal Stokes' KV Technical History and Variants. I wasn't going to borrow it from him ( worries over the cost of the book and possible shipping issues ) but now, I think I will go, hat in hand, and see if he will still ship it. I'll return it when he visits in May and he can hand carry it home. Yes sir, I have the 1/24 in panzer gray and now the 1/72 in soviet green and there is a third model on the way painted in the tri tone camo used on some vehicles during the Greece campaign. I will have a lot to consider and think about.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Great to hear Sassgrunt will be around in May. I owe both of you a beer! If the timing is right, we need to get down to the FRAG group and do some battling.
