Panther Ausf G looking for HL info.

Post by Panther Ausf G »

Hi guys preparing to start my D-Day build.

So far I have only found the box and operating instructions for the 1/30th Sherman I intend using. I noticed it’s got a Heng Long logo, and Number 3841-01.
Question: - is it a genuine HL Tank?
Over to you guys, any clues, I’m not a dedicated fan of HL. My smaller scale Tanks are all Tamiya. Only because HL were not available or were regarded as inferior copies in those days.

Next stage is locating the Tank, its hiding somewhere at the moment. I’ll look for something else instead that usually works for me.

Then it’s exactly what I plan to do with it for the D–Day build.
We do not stop playing because we grow old.

Hey Panther
I'm no expert... but from what I've seen of the HENG LONGs and TAMIYAs in that scale... they are almost a direct clone ...trigger control and all...but I would agree with critics... those older models weren't that great ...it's Tamiya's electrics that set them apart

Panther,
I've got one of those. It just broke another track the other day. strong runner and a clone basically, appearance wise of the new 1/16 HL M4A3 (once you cut the barrel down like I did) It is an actual HL rc tank with working suspension, headlights and on the newer models, a flash and bang when you fire the main gun. My older version, the barrel just lights up red and goes up and down. What do you want to know?
warm regards,
Painless

UH OH... do I spy a GODZILLA ... :haha: ...it's a scary thing Painless.. because I'm a fan of the genre..and have quite a collection of those figures :haha:

Sounds like HENG LONG made a number of changes to their line up... I recall the "plastic" of the SHERMAN in that scale being almost identical.. also the remote...but when opening them up... the difference in the boards and circuitry could clearly be seen

I hope Panther finds his... as I would enjoy seeing his offering for the anniversary build

Alpha,
Aye. Heng Long lists this Sherman now as the 3841-01 Mine is the elder 3841 from almost a decade ago. Still runs strong. I have had to replace the tracks and rechargable 4.7 battery, I just ordered another set of tracks off of Ebay so parts are still available. These new tracks have to have a center guide horn removed since the road wheels and idlers are center grooved now so that is a tiny bit of a pita. I have an old thread detailing that fun from the last time the tracks let go on the forum here. Panther should have fun modeling his once he finds it and should look around for an older 3841 like mine to get the more accurate running gear off of it. I cut down the barrel on mine and added a brass sleeve. Also, I added a .50 cal and turret detail antenna and touched up the paint. This tank can be made to look much better than out of the box. Interesting note. The road wheels on the 1/30 are the same sort of hollow backed ones that are on the new M4A3. I speculated when I first saw the adverts for the new Heng Long Sherman that they had scaled up their existing 1/30 M4A3. *chuckles* Godzilla? Oh Yeah! I have a few. That one is the uber articulated version from a couple of years ago.
warm regards,

Hi guys
Thanks for your response.

I hadn’t noticed the HL logo before recently finding the box & instructions.
The instructions refer to returns address. But it doesn’t have any such address printed anywhere.
What I was querying, at the price I paid /lack of address could it be HL or yet another clone by some other far eastern outfit.

Painless has nailed it, my box art shows the same model, so looks like I have the real deal.

I bought the one I have around 6 years ago. I was attending a show with some of my models. The traders stand was next to the tables our models were on. He had a wide stock range with about thirty plus of these Sherman’s they were brand new in a sealed box, bargain at £12.00.
As we were breaking down at the close of the show he had just one left. I had bought a few things from him and offered him £10.00 to take it off his hands, OK deal done.
Back home we tried it out everything working fine. Tried a couple of programs, it followed them no problem.
Regarding it as a very young kids toy, It then went into the workshop (Shed or perhaps the Garage). Where it lurks to this day.
The rest is history. I want to use it as part of my D-Day build.

Painless...Thanks again for the lead to the Sherman.
I did Google search on it and watched a couple of vids of this model in use.
It's even worse than I remember. :{ I see now why I kicked into the long grass the day I took it out of the box, and tried it.

Hey Ho..... Now for a re-think about my D-Day model.

Good Afternoon, Panther,
A pleasure, my friend. If you wanted to make this Sherman a better runner, do like some have done to the 1/35 scale tanks and drop a HL set of electronics into it. It is a good runner (main weakness being the tracks) and can be modeled into a much more accurate looking M4A3 with a little work and some patience. Good luck whichever route you decide to go and remember to have fun!
regards,
Painless

Thanks for your input on this one Painless.
It was while we (my wife) were having a new years clear out the box and instructions surfaced. "What do you want to do with this" waving the box. :problem:
Idea!!!! fast thinking, I replied "I'm going to use it for the forum D-Day build"!!! 8O
What I should have said was it's rubbish put it in the recycling bin. Then just gone for something using one of my 1/16th Sherman's.
I have now created the proverbial rod. @)
Must find the model if only to justify my fast thinking idea. One of those times when the mouth was not totally engaged with the brain.
