Hobby Engine Leopard 2A5

Post by cupoftea »

Have just got my hands on a used HE Leopard 2A5 and plan to do some work on it.
Plan is to replace the existing control system with Futaba 2.4ghz equipment and to do away with having a tank control unit in the tank. I am going to use twin speed controllers and the transmiter's elevon mixing. Also I plan to use standard micro servos for gun recoil and elevation and use a small speed control coupled to the existing turret rotation mechanism. Battery pack will be replaced with a 2s 5800mah lipo (have used these in my two other tanks and find them a huge improvement over the standard HL battery pack). At the moment the speed controllers and a sound board are on order and should be with me in the next couple of days.

I am working on a circuit that will provide gun recoil action and trigger a flash LED and sound when the gun is fired. I don't know if this circuit will be viable but it is fun trying. If I can't get it to work I will try comething else.

Will post pictures when the build is underway.

Good Morning, Mr. Tea,
I've got one of the original Hobby Engine Abrams and even back then, it came with recoil, flash and sound. It does not fire a missile so perhaps that is a change they made over time? If you go to the Web and look around, you may find some original parts from HE that will retrofit with your tank or ask Forgebear. He has a Thread on here about rebuilding the HE tanks into regular Heng Long type ones. I found new rubber tracks with him when no one else had a line on them. Good luck.
regards,

Thank you Sir

The Leopard does have a barrel recoil of sorts but it is not very convincing and I just love to tinker with electronics (my favourite part of a tank build is the electronics)
