I'm building a M36 Jackson and I have a doubt about the correct Olive Drab. The Tamiya TS-5 indicated for the 105mm Tamiya Sherman seems very dark. Does anyone have any alternative spray paint? A lighter shade?

I use Vallejo US Olive Drab, though depending how it is applied affects the colour. I thin the Model Colour type with car screenwash, and airbrush it on over red primer, and it 'looks' about right. I also lighten panels by mixing a few drops of Olive Drab with White, and give the middle sections of each panel a light airbrushing. It adds a bit of texture to the build doing it that way.

Humbrol spray cans are pretty good - they offer two or three olive drab and olive green colours.

I've just started using a new spray by Plastic Soldier Co in their "Army Sprays WW2 Armour" range. They have a number of Olive Drabs but I've picked the US version and tested it on my 1/6 Willis Jeep WIP



I had sprayed the body and wheels with Humbrols dark green but in this photo I've begun over spraying the body with the new "Plastic Soldier" spray. You can see the wheels are quite different as they're still the Humbrol colour. I'm very happy with the results so far. The cans work out a bit cheaper per volume too @ £8.50 for a 400ml can in Dorking Models.

if you can get these paints do they are much better than Tamiya or humbrol I did my Sherman with this paint its very fine in its spray pattern,a bit to dry you can get, us ,brit,russian tank colours or army colours

Thanks to all of you. I´ll try this "Plastic Soldier" spray. It will take about two months to arrive, so, I´ll have the time to finish the tank.

I never knew a paint colour could be so complex, but an evening researching the web has shown that between model paint manufacturers how much variation there is!

For my M4 (IBY) I was going to plum for the Tamiya Olive Drab II , but this plastic soldier paint interests me. The Jeep above looks great, I would love to see what it looks like on a Sherman, if anyone has pictures it would be very helpful.

At this point my intention is to have mine looking as if it has been waiting at the dock, factory fresh, just as the European war ended.
Tamiya indicate that late war Shermans were more commonly painted a greener shade of Olive Drab, however I have found no evidence to support this!

...and I thought choosing the colour would be the easy bit!!!!

Let me toss my hat into the ring as well, Model Masters Olive Drab in the can # FS 34087. The paint in the touch up jars is labeled the same and dries exactly the same shade. I was amazed as such was not the case with paints back in the day. Example: 'Maxene', painted with the Model Masters. (Pre weathering)

And my 2 cents since I am just in the process of building a funky 105. I have a masterpiece of a book called Son of Sherman Design and development. Basically a 400 page bible on the Sherman. I love the pages that show, for example, 12 unique examples of the bogie running gear. Not one green is the same!

I used a grey primer and then a really dark geen I made up as the preshade and then Tamiya XF 62 as the base colour and I am going to make 2 more stages lighter by adding XF 60 to the 62 and finish up with 95% flat clearcoat and 5% buff for dusting. I will be posting some pics but not quite yet!

Model masters spray can paint seems to be non existent this side of the pond!

So I have ordered the Plastic Soldier US tank OD.... Well if it is good enough for canned, it's good enough for me!

As for Son of Sherman Vol1, having just read an extensive review with lots of pics, I want bad!!!!
