What are these panels on modern tanks ??

At the risk of being a dimbo I have always wondered what these are for ........

Considering one is an American Abraham's and the other is a British Challanger II ... what is this panel for on both vehicles ?

Creates a cool spot that shows up on thermal image sights.

Like trackmech said, they are IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) panels. Assumption here is that the enemy would not have those devices when viewed at night using thermal imaging. In daytime, troops and tankers can use the tank's silhouette or other means of identification.
