Grey paint to match HL Tiger 1

Post by cupoftea »

Hello All

I would like to get hold of some grey paint that matches the factory 'panzer grey' paint applied to a heng long tiger 1 and was wondering if anyone knew if there was an acrylic paint available that matched it. I want to paint the drive and idler wheels to match the rest of the tank.

Many thanks for any advice.

Hi, it all depends on the manufacturing date as to the colour, the early Tiger 1 was delivered in Dunkelgrau (dark gray ) the nearest to that on my early Tiger 1 is Humbrol number 27 SEA GRAY, but it really is in the eye of the builder, If you go to the hints and tips site and select painting and weathering you will find directions to Alan Hanbys section which is pretty much the definative on the subject, what you should remember is that as the War progressed standard paint schemes more or less disappeared and it became dependant on what colouring material the individual Tank crews had to hand, which for a modeller gives you a free hand, Humbrol Sea Gray comes in a pot or as a spray and both are acrylic, good luck. shaun
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

Thanks for your help Sirs.

My grandson really likes the tank as is but I am keen to do some detailing work on it.

I guess the best option is to buy myself another Tiger 1 and go to town on that................................

I think you guys miss-understood cupoftea's question, he wants to match the grey paint Heng Long use when painting their tanks, not what colour should it be in reality.
I have not found a match with any of the normal manufacturers colours, I think they make their own mix up rather than buying it in, when I replaced the barrel on my tiger with a correct length one the colour was markedly different so I ended up making my own blend of grey to get it as near as Heng Long's colour as possible.

Hi cupoftea,

Don't be alarmed by our resident obsessives (I include myself).

Heng Long painted the sprockets and idlers silver to look like the metal parts on some of their upgraded tanks. If you just want to tone this down on your grandson's Tiger choose any Humbrol dark grey and it will look fine.

Good Afternoon,
I was wondering why Heng Long did that with the sprockets. Question answered.

Thanks chaps.

I got hold of a spray can of humbrol 27 sea grey as per jarndice's suggestion. It is not a perfect match but not bad either. Problem is the upgrade bug has now struck and I will eventually spray the whole tank sea grey. What I have decided to do is not 'super detail' it but rather to just to make it look less toy like. So far my only mods have been to make the rx aerial internal, move the power switch and fit a charging jack. I have a 2s 5000 mah lipo battery that I will be fitting in due course and have just ordered some better headlights and a machine gun from welsh dragon. The tank now has sea grey coloured sprockets and idlers and looks so much better for it that I want to continue. Next target is the plastic tracks. I will be painting those so they look a little less plastic when I have figured out what colours would work on them.

I have a heng long tiger 1 tank & found that humbrol matt 96 RAF blue is a very good match for the blue/grey HL colour of my tank.
