has anyone done a comparison to find out which oil produces the most smoke [heng long oil] babyoil ] or fog liquid ] it would be interesting to find out which is the best produceing smoke liquid without all the mods just a straight test on bouth standard proportional &none proportional heng long smoker units , tanker 242,
Hi tanker 242
There are two different types of fog liquid, one type uses a heating element like our tanks do and the other type uses heated plates and an atomising spray using a water based vapour fluid so it needs to be the right type as the water based ones don't work in our smokers, I have tried baby oil just buying a cheap one but found it a bit thicker than the standard oil so whilst it smoked ok it soon stopped because it was not wicking up to the heating element fast enough as the oil was evaporated off, I'm currently trying different methods of thinning it, I have tried lamp oil and barbeque lighting fluid but not reached a ideal mix yet.
hi jonger thanks for that info i have tryd the jhonsons baby oil found it smokes ok as well as the heng long stuff was thinking of trying the fog juice from maplins to see iff that works any better , will try adding a fan at some stage ,tanker 242
Hi tanker
I tried a 50/50 mix of Glycerin and water and got no smoke at all, I got a few tiny whisps of evaporating water (basically steam I think) but no smoke, that's when I looked up how the commercial fog machines worked and found they use pumps to pressurize the fluid through a nozzle to atomize it to produce the fine droplets of fluid which creates the fog, so came to the conclusion that our smokers need oil not a water based fluid.
I would love to know if anyone else has had any success with this mix so I could try again - I do wonder if I have the right Glycerin as the same word means different things across the pond, for instance Paraffin in the UK is a spirit based liquid for burning in lamps heaters etc but in the USA it means liquid paraffin oil - which incidentally is whats in Baby oil, hence its recommendation for use in our smokers.
hi guys tryd a little experiment today soacked one part of a shoelace in jhonsons baby oil & one part in heng long oil then tutched each part with a soldering iron baby oil gave off some smoke but heng long oil gave off a great deal of smoke , give it a try & find out . tanker 242
I have just modified my test smoker so the wick and element is between the air inlet and outlets as strmnd54 recommends and found I'm getting much more smoke, it was as simple as turning the lid round to put the element closer to the inlet.
I'm currently using a 50/50 mix of baby oil and lamp oil and I'm getting really nice smoke with a hint of blue so it does look like exhaust smoke as I found baby oil on its own was whiter so whilst it looked good it was not as authentic to my eye.
