new guy

Post by ccdbcvtrider1 »

Hello-
New here. my son and I have some VS tanks, older ones, the crappy pistol grip transmitter types. we had 3. we used them outdoors and were having a good time with them. well, one lost a tooth on two different gears in the gear box...another one broke something else, i cant remember what, but we now have 2 tanks running as i took the two broken ones and got one of them running. needless to say the gear box isnt up to the challenge of running outside much. So I am looking to upgrade tanks.

We like the IR versions over the airsoft because we can battle and there is little question as to hits being questioned or not.
I have been looking into the tanks from Torro, I really like them, but pricey. I am not sure we need a 90% metal tank, I am mostly after a pair of tanks we can use outside without worrying of it breaking gears or tracks coming off, reliability is key. HongLong is an option too, but i am finding most of them to be 27mhz and I was leaning toward 2.4ghz. I was looking at the Taigen tanks as well.

I dont know of any clubs in our area, we live in Vermont, if anyone else does.

Just trying to figure out what the next tank should be, my son likes the Tiger of course, but likes the Cornwall too, although i havent seen any models of GB tanks around. I like the M4 Sherman, but not the jumbo, the M4a i believe it is. I dont mind the russian KV1 or KV2, thats a mean tank.

so I guess I start my research...

Welcome to the forum Kevin,

Hope you find something that suits your purpose. Good luck, lots to choose from. Have you looked in Clubs Around the World on this forum? It may help with a club search...

If you don't mind opening up your tank right away, you can always get a Heng Long and then put in the Taigen 2.4Ghz radio in. Not hobby grade but will get you up and running at a reasonable price. Just make sure you have the metal gears and tracks/drive wheels.

I'm the kind of person who feels that spending more upfront pays off in the long run. If I go the cheep route, I might find that the model doesn't do it all for me and then by the time upgrades are all paid for and finally painfully installed, I will be at the same cost as the tank that was more in the first place.

Problem I am having right now is that the torro tanks are hard to find with a US distributor. I found two great IR torro tanks that well, while expensive are really nice but the extra $250 in shipping to the US is a drag.
My local hobby store is checking on Taigen tanks. They order a lot from imex which is Taigen. So hopefully they have an answer for me. Taigen makes a tiger full metal IR version that seems nice. They don't make any US tanks in IR thought which is a drag. So maybe the Russian KV-1. Although I really like the KV-2 better.
If the Taigen IR's are good quality right out of the box then that would be great. Otherwise I will always be eyeing the torro tanks.
And no, I am not the kind of guy that likes to get multiples. I am a one and done kind of guy. That way I can focus in just the one item and keep it running well not have three units where two are in repair.

I think i am in trouble, two Torro brand tanks were ordered...the tiger and the KV-2. They are coming my way from Europe, the battery charger is the Euro style, does anyone know if the charging pack has the quick change type where I can slide off the two round prongs and replace them with the US flat prongs? or am I looking at having to get a whole new charging pack?

So....I have the Torro tanks. We have had them for a little while now and it wasnt without issues...
the Tiger tank wouldnt fire, it was found that if I pull on the canon while firing, the resetting of the canon after recoil wasnt operating properly. After continued fire and manual re-extending of the canon, the whole process of recoil and re-extension functions properly now. Must have been needing a break in of some sort.
The tiger also needed some adjustments to the track tension, there are two set screws under the hull to adjust this. I am not really 100% sure I have figured it out exactly, the adjusting using the underside screws didnt seem to affect anything, I had to look within the hull and found the bolt that was being adjusted from the set screw, after trial and error, I think I figured out how I needed to adjust the bolt from within the hull. seems to be better, just not sure really.
The KV-2 ran well, but the gearbox has developed a problem. I first though it was a track tension setting like the tiger, but after opening the hull I found that the drive wheel shaft was completely loose, the bushing holding the shaft in its proper place had fallen into the gearbox thus allowing the shaft to move around in the hole of the gearbox. I mean a lot of movement. I thought i could just put the bushing back into the gearbox wall, but it doesnt stay. its better now, but the whole drive wheel shaft still slides perpandicular to the gearbox. the bushings stay in the walls of the gearbox, but it still has a ton of play compared to the other gearbox for the other track.
I took the smoke box out of the KV-2...the whole design of the KV-1 or KV-2 doesnt allow a lot of room in the hull. in fact getting the hull to close with the battery installed is very difficult. I was surprised with the lack of organization within the hull regarding all the wires. I had to conjure up a guard over the RX18 fan to keep wires from hitting the blades. Also I didnt find the smoke production to be all that impressive and didnt care enough to try to keep it. once gone, there is now room for the wire to the battery to lay and the lid latches properly.
So I am now looking at this purchase with some regret...they were pricy and after seeing a Taigen at a local store, I believe they are produced by the same company. everything I looked at was the same between the Taigen and the Torro...I am beginning to believe that HL might be the root production center for all of them. anyhow, all I know is that I spent a good chuck of $ and am now looking at needing a new gearbox for my KV-2 I am in contact with Matorro and they have seen a video of what I am dealing with, they have yet to give me any real solution though. this is letting me know how tough it will be to get support from a company in Germany, the seller was in the UK, and I live in NorthEast USA. Looks like I am going to have to figure out how to remove that gearbox and fix it myself. not really what I was figuring for a tank I pretty much paid full retail for. honestly, if i had bought the Taigen tiger from the local store, I would probably be in the same spot anyhow as he doesnt do repairs either, I guess paying the same price including shipping from the UK for the IR version of the tanks as I would have paid for the BB version from the local store isnt all that bad.
anyone know how to pull the drive wheel off the drive shaft on their KV-1? i imagine its the same. I already pulled the outer drive wheel off, the drive wheel is in 3 parts, the wheel cover, outer wheel and the inner wheel. I have the cover and outer wheel off, the inner seems to be maybe pressfit? an allen bolt was holding on the outer wheel.

So there goes my story of first exposure to 1/16 scale RC tanks.

Kevin, you just need to pray the wheel cover off the KV-1 and you should see the allen screw holding the outer wheel with a washer. Sometime the outer and inner wheel will come apart once you remove the screw, but sometime they are glued together and you will have to pray the outer and inner off each other.

Unfortunately I don't believe you will get much after sales support from anyone in general in terms of actually fixing the problems. The good thing is that there is tons of parts available but you will have to be handy which seems like you are anyway.

Good luck !

Michael-
I have the outer wheel off...its the inner wheel thats still on the drive shaft. dont i need that off in order to pull the gear box out of the hull? That inner wheel is the one I cant seem to pull off easily, is it just pressure fitted? I didnt want to pull too hard and break something. Also there is this piece of plastic on the outside of the hull that will need to come off as it overlaps the inner drive wheel, how is that held on? is it easy to take off?
