Tonys Tiger Diary

Post by tony1955 »

Hi Guys,
Just like most people Ive decided to mod/correct my Heng Long Tiger.

I'm basing it on Tiger S33 (Das Reich -1943) in the modelers guide to the Tiger, only using no S21 decals from peddinghaus.

So far its a pile of bits, except the turret which I have put in a recoil unit, and Ive cut the back of the storage bin and added a lifting point.

Things to do,

replace hull machine gun (my fault, i broke the plastic one!)
remove molded tools, and replace with metal ones,
remove right side aerial tube,
add wooden jack block,
make headlight covers and add wiring,
open drivers vision port and add internal glass,
add periscope detail,
add engine grilles,
make and fit s-mine launchers,
make and fit transmission armor covers,
add internal aerial,
remove left side tail light,
remove molded starter handle and replace,
turn starter plate through 180 degrees,
run in metal gearboxes,
get exhaust smoke to come out through the exhaust,
add wear and tear to side mudguards,
paint add decals and weather.

That should keep me going a little while. I'll probably think of more things to do along the way.

If anyone is interested I'll add some photos as I do some interesting stuff,

Tony

hello Toni,

you are about to make the bro of my Tiki

mine was 812, then renamed 833 for a day (or a few) and finally S34

searching the web i've found some useful info about 812 and the others Tiger issued early 1943 to Das Reich , if you know the S33 serial it might help you with a lot of details

if you want take a look at what i've done, look here:

http://www.rctankwarfare.co.uk/forums/v ... 22&t=10148

about S33 there is more info, sirry if you have already this:

http://tiif.de/thread.php?threadid=47&s ... c77aa19674

http://www.network54.com/Forum/47207/th ... %26quot%3B

and a lot of more info on missing lynx...

best regards and good luck!
Jussek

Hi Jussek,
Thanks for all the information. you certainly have done some great work on your tank. Some of what you have done is way beyond what I intend - im not going to attempt the turret repositioning.
I'm going to follow what you have done with the exhausts - and connect the smoke unit inside with small bore aluminium, tubing to the stacks - i never did like the supplied exhaust shields.
already youve added more stuff to my list,

remodel the jack and add brackets,
remodel the feifel air cleaners and pipes,

no doubt there will be more as the days go on.

Thanks

Tony

hello Toni!

before doing anything with the Feifel air cleaners, please, first be sure that S33 had the early type (like Tiki) or not, look for pics or info, or ask in missing lynx ;)

best regards
Jussek

Sorry Jussek I may have confused you I am making S21. But thanks for the warning about the fiefels. The picture ive found of S21 looks like it has the second pattern (single chamber on top).
Heres a couple of pictures of work in progress on the s-mine launchers, made from a old tomato puree tube, and using a drill bit as a former.

Here the turret, complete with recoil unit. Ive followed the book for the colour scheme - to me it looks better with two colors than three.

Time to tackle the exhausts.
the shields were not going to be used, so i snapped off the bottom screw point and fixed it into the stacks to act as an anchor point. After filling and sanding I got the exhausts to my liking. I elongated the top holes on the tank back panel then put about 120 degree bend in some aluminum pipe (so the smoke oil could run in), inserted it through the exhaust top hole and stuck it with a blob of milliput screwed the exhaust stack to the back plate using the anchor point I had created. While the putty was still pliable I adjusted the pipes position then poured in some glue, laid it on its back and let gravity and chemistry do its stuff.

Ive noticed that the heng long armoured exhaust part isn't the right shape. Theirs are just round, where as the actual thing had a kind of point on it, so its time to dig out the milliput and start sculpting.......

Finally its finished (well until I start making changes). I had a slight disaster when one of the turret wires caught in the gearbox, and I had to dismantle it and free it. I then build a gearbox guard to stop it happening again.
Well onto the finished thing. I opted for not much shipping, rusting or damage, as I figured the life expectancy of these things on the Eastern front was measures in days or weeks not months or years, so it wouldn't get much of a chance to corrode, before it was destroyed. Anyway hope you like it
