Elmod IR Battle System stealth version...

Post by wibblywobbly »

Well it took most of the day, and I still have to tidy up the cosmetics after hacking the turret and cupola about, but my sensors and leds are pretty much out of sight. The sensors are behind the vision slits in my late version cupola, with one in the pistol port, and the leds are mounted internally around the base of the turret. I would never have contemplated this if I hadn't seen what Grompix had done, and thanks to his knowledge I went ahead...with my heart in my mouth most of the time.

I can honestly say that this has been the most challenging job yet on the Tiger. Getting the turret back together was an absolute and utter nightmare, I can assure you.

So now no one can see my sensors, and when the tank receives a hit the underside of the turret lights up...no more mushrooms!!

Thanks Chris!!  ;)

I'm really glad it's worked out Rob. And putting the LEDs in the base of the turret is a stroke of genius! Fantastic work. Have you had time to test the range of the IR sensors and brightness of the LEDs yet?

Best regards

My bright idea was slightly flawed!  :(

Wiring it all up was bad enough, but dropping the mushroom tower down inside the turret meant it fouled the barrel hinge mounting plate, so the back half of that had to go.  >:(
This is all whilst the sensors are glued into the cupola and hard wired to the IR board through the hatch hole.  >:(
Then the barrel motor gear was spotted rubbing on the wiring.  >:(
Then the cupola had to be glued back in place with wires crammed in under it and trying to push it off.  >:(

However, I have tested everything and it all works. The four leds flash out under the turret base, and using my tv remote in test mode, the sensors activate the 'hits'...phew!

For extra Brownie points I have changed the incoming hit sound to a 'whoosh and a bang', and the resurrection sound is 60 seconds of 'Panzerlied'.  ;D

I couldn't have contemplated this without your help Chris. Thanks for your patience.

Looks really good Rob. Much better than that ugly 'mushroom' without a doubt. Very nice work.

Well I have just been testing this against Greenys Jagdpanther that he has just built (and copied my paint scheme on...grrr!). What is the optimum method for setting up the IR emitter? I am getting hits, so the receivers are doing their job in the new positions, but he has a Leopard and the Jagdpanther, both of which can hit me from any distance whilst me hitting him is pretty much chance! Should it be mounted in some sort of reflective tube to concentrate the beam, or should it protrude to spread the light (but I assume reduces effective range?).

It is also annoying how the Tamiya's take a hit and remain able to move and fire, whilst the Elmod, even in compatibility mode, stop completely, and then have to get moving again. Once again I am the proverbial sitting duck! Grrr!

Having said that, the Tiger is much more scale like than the Tamiya's which seem like 'radio-controlled tanks', whilst mine seems like a scale model of the real thing...which I guess was what Elmod were aiming for?

The Tamiya set up is a 5mm diameter LED in a 10mm (ish) long tube. Sounds like your emitter is buried too deep!

Hi Rob I set my emmitters 10mm down a polished metal tube to help with the range so far not had a problem with it if you use aluminium tube it should give you good range when painting I put a little rolled tape in to make sure there is no paint gets in also tape sensors,Yep I follow Chris with his teachings so far have done my Tiger 1 Panzer 3 with schurzen and My Panzer 4 which is not fully finished but its fully running just to finish off the schurzen for it and weather it .Then I have my Stug 3 to finish and My sherman ,next up after these is to I.R. an 88mm gun will have to build a bunker also hide the battle unit .The More you hide them the easyer it gets the first one I did took ages the Panzer 4 only took me about 4 hours to complete ,
