I'm looking to maybe upgrade the motors in my Pershing from the standard ones (metal gearbox) - can anyone recommend a good supplier (I'm in the UK) and have any recommendations for the motors themselves? Basically, I'd like to give the tank some more power on turning on grass etc, the usual good stuff.
Cheers!
I'm not keen on the Taigen parts, but an issue which hasn't been mentioned here yet, is that if they are similar or the exact same as the Heng Long "standard" upgrade metal gearbox, the gears are the softer white metal or pot-metal type (what ever you want to name them), & they may not last long after a motor upgrade anyway, especially if you intend to run the tank hard in grass or any terrain which places a lot of stress on the drive train. I know some people might have had a good experience when using bigger motors with the white metal gearboxes in their tanks, such as Tankbear seems to have, but I think there are many more people who end up having issues with them, than those that don't. The softer metal gears are much more prone to stripping teeth eventually, even when using the under powered motors that come with those gearboxes. When under the excess speed & torque provided with bigger motors, the odds of stripping gear teeth increase drastically, especially depending on how hard you drive the tank, such as doing a lot of spin-turns, & how rough the terrain is where you are performing the hard driving.
It seems you have not had any bad experience of stripping any gear teeth yet, even though you stated you have run your tank in grass & had it straining to spin turn. My brief experience, is that I've had both sets of my standard metal gearboxes already strip some gear teeth using the underpowered original motors (Heng Long Panther G & KV-1), so for me it was 2 out of 2 tanks that stripped the softer metal gear teeth because I tried running them in grass as well as a slightly rough dirt field, & I didn't even run them that long or really that aggressively in my opinion.
If you aren't happy with the way it runs in grass, then best to upgrade to any one of the available 3:1 or supposedly 4:1 gearboxes for the extra torque needed. Then, if you find that the upper end speed of the tank is too slow for you, possibly look into changing the pinion gear out for one with some more teeth than the original pinion has on it, or look into bigger motors for it, or you can do both.
One set of gearboxes not mentioned in this thread yet are the Waltersons 3-Speed (
Read this thread about them here). A metal gear gearbox that comes with a pinion gear puller tool as well as 3 different pinions to swap out to adjust the way the gearbox performs.
