Hi Steiner.

Apart from their lower profile they appear to have the same speed/performance as the 3-1 HL gearboxes. They are slightly more expensive though. Rob might have more info.

hi steiner sorry to jump in on your build chris   from what ive heard they have a ratio of 67:1 the motor is smaller but the main spindle gear is huge so this gives a better power output for the smaller motor

the main gears are machine cut and not cast so no metal bits falling off 

the final drive shaft has bearings (real roller bearings)

to date i have them in my tiger,T34,and soon my porsche k/tiger

they are a bit slower but they would climb a tree in the torque department

the only bad bit is the price but when you way up what your getting quality wise then they are better value than the H/Long 3:1s  IMHO

Have fabricated the pre-filter cannisters that were fitted to late ausf 'G's and early ausf 'H's. They were a bit of a fiddle to get looking about right but I reckon they'll do. I used a coiled tension spring for the hoses and covered them with two layers of heat-shrink tubing. The canisters themselves were made from some scrap aluminium tubing I had lying around in my 'scrapbox'. I use the term 'scrapbox' loosely however. If I really did have only one box for all the "they-might-come-in-useful" bits I've collected over the years I reckon it would be about the size of a large skip! 

I've hidden a charging socket behind the auxiliary engine muffler as I did on my Bandai Panzer IV. I'm slowly adding charging sockets to all my RC Tanks. I've found that constantly removing hull tops or turrets to change batteries has inflicted a lot of punishment to my tanks over the years. The more detail I add the more the models suffer hence my decision. Although (according to a thread on that 'other place') there is a risk of batteries catching fire when charging inside the tank, which would be a disaster I shudder to contemplate! 

I removed the front mudguards on the HL chassis as they didn't look right after I raised the sprockets. I've made new ones from tin plate and soldered on some mini-hinges I bought from Andy at 'MilitaryMight'. The 'bolts' were made from dress-maker pins super-glued in place and then snipped off to the right length underneath.

Just need to fit the Tamiya turret schurtzen and I think (fingers crossed) it's ready to undercoat and paint.

Very impresive indeed Chris I like what you did with this model ( well to be honest I like all your stuff ). Got me fired up to get on with mine when I get some more time off. Very much looking forward to seeing the painting stages. All the best for now

great work on the Panzer IV hybrid

Hey Chris,
Can you do me a favour and check how my home made plans compare with the Tamiya kit's schurzen? I've just decided to redo mine (largely because I realised that I should have ground off the vision ports from the turret sides, and not applied Zimm to them >:( - thank heaven for left over turrets from other projects ) and I'd like to make one or two other tweaks - mainly better hinges and bolt heads...

Bugger, I thought you had made the turret schurzen, didn't realise they came with the kit.
Are those hinged air intake baffles I see, or is that a future mod?

thats why I was hoping Chris could help to benchmark my "scaled of off a combination of a 1/18 cheap toy and a 1/72 model I built as a kid" turret schurzen design, vs the Tamiya parts (tho there's no telling if they got lazy and used the same cheap toy as a reference as I did - Yeah I said it - that should light a fire under the Tamiya trolls out there )
