Re: Fuse/Breaker
Hello Mrs tiger205 here
Ive nicked Tony's ID for a mo cos having just read this thread through it reminded me of a little story about how dangerous batteries can be...
This is a true story! Many years ago I worked as a GP's receptionist and I took a phonecall from an Undertaker. Apparently one of the GPs in the practice had signed a death certificate and all the other neccesary paperwork ready for cremation but had forgotten to tick the box about a pacemaker...
The upshot of this was that partway through the service at the crematorium the battery in it exploded, apparently it knocked the person who was speaking off the podium and the undertakers assistant who was stood near to the curtain off his feet. The speaker was seen clambering to his feet, hair on end and glasses all askew and the undertakers assistant suffered mild concussion.
So... if anyone tells you batteries are harmless, you know differently

Re: Fuse/Breaker
Dammit, just read this thread and missed all the fun! :-\
Just thought I would mention that the Elmod kit comes with an inline 20 amp fuse between the switch and the battery, and seeing as these guys seem to know their a*se from their elbow when it comes to electronics, I am guessing that the fuse idea has merit.
I always thought that the reason HL boards blow is because although a motor may draw a nominal 4-5 amps, this is under load free running conditions. If you read the specs on say a Graupner Zoom 400, or various other motors, they quote a stall draw of 20-30 amps. In other words, pottering around the garden will not blow your boards but doing super spins in the super grippy shag pile carpet in a vain attempt to ping the cat (who has by now learned to out manouevre your futile attempts) will cause the motors to stall and send the required board busting 20 amps through your unprotected HL boards. I assume that fitting the fuse before the boards limits the amps that the board can draw, sure the fuse might blow, but its cheaper to replace than a board.
I watched a friends Pershing go up in smoke during woodland maneouvres, his Pershing and my Tiger were going up identical inclines, I was wondering what the smell was and then noticed the smoke pouring out of his tank!
The RX18 boards will handle higher amps, in case anyone is interested.
Now as for the crematorium tale....slight flaw here...bodies aren't cremated until after the service, and they sure aren't cremated in the same room!!
Lipo batteries...never attempt to charge one without an expensive charger. They are unexploded bombs waiting to go off, see the vids on You Tube for all the warnings you will ever need.
Have fun

Re: Fuse/Breaker
the Elmod comes with a 10amp (Red) Car fuse, not 20amp, though the elmod could be 20amp
