Re: Heng Long Sherman
Good Morning,
Cupoftea, that Tamiya primer has the exact effect I'm looking for. It gives a lighter coat, perfect for preshading and doesn't erase detail like the primer that I was going to use would have. Excellent spray job there! Are you going to remove the tracks and spray the lower hull as well?
regards,
Painless

...Money!? What's that!?...
Re: Heng Long Sherman
Hi Painless
Yes - i am going to remove the tracks and wheels and spray the chassis etc. that will be next week some time. The tamiya primer is expensive but really good and covers well so a little goes a very long way. I think that the actual cost per model will be about the same as Halfords primer and as you rightly point out the Tamiya primer produces a nice thin coat that does not obscure detail.

Congrats on the smoking my friend!!!cupoftea wrote:Here is the sherman after a coat of primer on the deck and turret. Must admit I thought the welds I had done with miliput would look wrong but with primer on I like the look. I used Tamiya primer for the first time and have found it to be a lot better than the Halfords primer i normally use. I am unsure as to how effective preshading would be before the base coat of olive green because I wonder if the shading would show through a dark base coat.
On another note - it's been three weeks now since i gave up smoking - thank heavens for e-cigarettes!
That is so ironic. I too quit after 37 years and did it with electronic smokes. Haven't had a real one since Remembrance Day 2012 and stopped using the electronic one This past Remembrance Day 2013. I thought that was appropriate since I started smoking when I put on a funny green suit for a few years!
And, to reward myself I got back into models and my love of armour by getting involved in this madness!
Again, 3 cheers to you my friend and it only gets easier!

Re: Heng Long Sherman
I guess exact colours of ww2 armour are now fairly hard to estimate. With the passing of so many years the memory of those who saw the armour in the field has probably faded to the point of 'it was green' or 'it was brown'. Most folks would have a hard time remembering the exact shade of the paint on the front door of their house fifty years ago. For myself - i have no real clue as to what flavour of olive drab to use so i tend to stick to Tamiya. I plan to use Tamiya olive drab as a base coat and then to do some very light modulation with the olive drab mixed with some dark yellow. I have decals for a Sherman used by the Free French Forces (I think in Italy). After my decal foul up on the tiger I plan to use these properly and will spray the areas where decals are to be applied with Tamiya gloss varnish, then overspray the decals with gloss followed by matt varnish. I want to do it as a French Sherman because I think we tend to somewhat overlook the contribution of other nations in the liberation of Europe.
