I understand he was a propaganda magnet among the Nazi Regime but from information I've read nobody outside of Germany knew who he was, why would they? Other than knowing he was in theatre I doubt anyone would be able to make a positive identification of him.
Regarding his decoration I read he was the most decorated, but people mostly remember Villers-Bocage and where he received his last and highest decoration. I don't see any evidence of being a brilliant tactician but then I've not found anything substantial about individual engagements other than Villers, and very little about his time in a StuG or Panzer III. His tactics at Villers, and those that led to his death and the deaths of his unit certainly don't show those skills.
What I do see is lots of hero worship, and when you base that most of that comes from Nazi propaganda it does make you wonder.
I always like a read though, if you know of a good, reasonably truthful accounts in book format I would appreciate the recommendation.
What I've said above is nothing against you Panzerman and I look forward to seeing your Tiger. I am still undecided on whether to do an early, middle or late production Tiger. Indecisive as ever!
