Hi,

I understand he was a propaganda magnet among the Nazi Regime but from information I've read nobody outside of Germany knew who he was, why would they? Other than knowing he was in theatre I doubt anyone would be able to make a positive identification of him.

Regarding his decoration I read he was the most decorated, but people mostly remember Villers-Bocage and where he received his last and highest decoration. I don't see any evidence of being a brilliant tactician but then I've not found anything substantial about individual engagements other than Villers, and very little about his time in a StuG or Panzer III. His tactics at Villers, and those that led to his death and the deaths of his unit certainly don't show those skills.

What I do see is lots of hero worship, and when you base that most of that comes from Nazi propaganda it does make you wonder.
I always like a read though, if you know of a good, reasonably truthful accounts in book format I would appreciate the recommendation.

What I've said above is nothing against you Panzerman and I look forward to seeing your Tiger. I am still undecided on whether to do an early, middle or late production Tiger. Indecisive as ever! :D

I chose the Early version because of the research into Grossdeutschland and their activities on the Eastern Front. Several excellent books on their battles, even their tactics but the information is general, very little specific information on individuals. But their is very specific information on the Tiger and the units that received them, the paintwork, details on versions and battle experience.

One point I would like to make, many of the German Hero's were suppressed by the allied press. Eric Hartman the air ace with 364+kills tends to make allied aces with 8 kills less skilled and certainly this information would of been very bad for moral.

The only reason I chose a Wittmann Tiger is because I found this old 1/35th scale
Nichimo kit which has a motors and gearbox with one of those old cable/tethered
radios. I want to to mod her to rc, she has steel wheels so I thought Wittmann
Tiger, will commence the build soon.

Thanks for all the help very interesting learning about this tank ace.

Just looking into zimmerit application at the moment for my current tiger. Zimmerit pattern on turret was different to hull. Wider broader and slightly flattened on turret. I calculate pattern on turret in 1/16 scale at width 12mm. Slightly less ridges per colum. When cured sand down slightly with emery board to flatten off the ridges. Hull zimmerit pattern 9mm wide but no sanding this time.

I must admit, it does simplify things when you have this much information to hand on a specific tank! Those Nichimo kits are great, quite rare now and usually command a premium price. I have an old 1:48 King Tiger, same setup, it is not one of the newer Korean/Chinese clones.

Thanks for the link Delboy, have started reading the anon URL lots of good early career information there if not a little heavy handed on the story!

32.Joachim Scholl 42 s.SS-Pz.Abt. 102
33.Franz Staudegger 35+ s.SS-Pz.Abt. 101

As you can see Wittmann is 5th overall. One point to note is that he did NOT get a Tiger until 1943 his time before that was spent in an SdKfZ 222 ( An armoured car ) a STuG III and a Panzer III
Villers Boccage surely has to be an outstanding example of tank strategy. Not only was a break through by the British towards Caen , stopped in its tracks but the 'enemy' that Wittmann faced on that day was a part of the famous and elite 'Desert Rats'! The mauling that he gave the British on that day had serious repercussions for the commanding officers of the Desert Rats with 4 or 5 'Big-wigs' subsiquently being relieved of their commands.
The 3rd on the list Otto Carius on one occasion whilst scouting ahead for his tanks was shot in, the leg , the arm, 4 Bullets in the back and one through the neck ! Yet he came back to fight again and survived the war. He opened up a pharmacy / chemist which he called Tiger Apotheke after his Tiger tank and his Jagd-Tiger.
All of the German 'aces' were amazing characters...look at Hans-Ulrich Rudel he flew 2,530 combat missions in a Stuka !! which was efectively an obsolete aircraft. Just look him up and see his amazing war service record.
