the problem was the wiring diagram I used was showing a white cable which threw me!
The reason there are so many black wires is because black is all I had at the time! and most had broken away from the 8 pin connector anyway. I also made them longer to avoid tension when I take the top off the tank. I did label the colours on the black wires.

My next quest is the smoke generator......thats never worked properly - and most don't from what i have seen!
