1/16 RC M-113A1 ACAV - Converting the Takom/Andy's HHQ kit to RC
Re: 1/16 RC M-113A1 ACAV - Converting the Takom/Andy's HHQ kit to RC
The adjustments done earlier paid off. Now he just falls in place.
The tank commander is in position, hands on the handle, thumbs on the trigger, very complicated to do. It needed a lot of adjustments because the position has a lot of 3 dimensional elements to integrate. The height of the figure, torso to the back, arms, hands, fingers, thumbs, the M2 itself, and the platform or seat under his feet. This took all my modelling skills and a lot of patience to get it right. I think i got it right... He is wearing the Takom helmet, upgraded a bit.
The left M60 gunner is in position.
He has raised his position for better observation using flare boxes.
Not a happy camper.
Those shields gave me some problems. Somehow, there is nothing to keep them strait. I figure it was like this in reality and left it go sideways a bit.
The Jason Studio commander was modified earlier to be a M60 rear gunner. While installing it, i was not happy yet with the position of the right arm so i decided to do more surgery. I managed to make his right forearm hold on to the M60, and then adjust to the elbow.
The joint is made, just need to paint now.

Re: 1/16 RC M-113A1 ACAV - Converting the Takom/Andy's HHQ kit to RC
Now i just wish his face had a better expression than just a cigarette.
The two M60 gunners side by side. The Takom kit does not come with ammo for the M60, looking really bad when figures have their hands on the trigger. The resin ammo belt is coming from a M60 gunner figure, same figure as the M60 gunner that looks like Animal mother. It is actually cheaper to buy another whole M60 figure on eBay just for the ammo belt than any other option available.
The resin ammo belt was heated with a hair dryer, curved and positioned.
Now for the 3 infantry riders, i tried to make them sit in different areas on the model. The idea was to position them in a way that they do not hide another figure behind. I determined this setup was optimal.
I brought the vehicle to the veranda for a sunset photoshoot and video

"The black M60 machine gunner...I just wish he would look more happy." He was drafted.

You will see small imperfections. I see them on larger pictures at the same time as you. I might correct some small glitches.
Jason accessories were added.

And finally, here is a Youtube video of the model in action.

Great build. I remember having a set of those green jungle boots when I was in the Army. I wore the heck out of them. They were so much more comfortable than the newer black jungle boots.

Extraordinary work if anything you do is not already !
(check the sticky left idler-it wasn't rotating)
Hell of an achievement to cram all the control functions in as well as the interior being so visible.
Bravo
(Hagenau is looking beautiful outside too by the way)

Thank you for your interest during this build
To finalize, here is a line up of the 1/16 M-113 RC fleet, from left to right.
M-113 Lynx recon, scratch built, AFV-Model metal suspension and tracks
M-113A2 with Tow launcher, scratch built with some Verlinden resin parts, AFV-Model metal suspension and tracks
M-113A1 ACAV from 2017, scratch built from a Ludwig base kit, HL gearbox and plastic Panzer III tracks
M-113A1 ACAV from 2025, Takom kit conversion, table top conversion
M-113 Australian Fire Support Vehicle (FSV), scratch built from a Ludwig base with 3D printed scorpion turret, AFV-Model metal suspension and tracks.
All of them have a build report on RCTW. The technical stuff is very different from one another.
Comparing the Ludwig based M113 on the left from 2017 with the latest conversion using Takom kit on the right. The electronics on the old one are completely outdated but the shapes and dimensions of the vehicle are pretty good. Because it has a HL gearbox, metal suspension arms, heavy torsion blades, Panzer III tracks and is quite heavy, the old one can go anywhere. The Takom conversion is cute but it is really a table top conversion designed to showcase the full detailed interior and figures, built for very different purposes.

Great job Louis. I'm following your build thread to make mine. It won't be as nice as I won't put figures and those aftermarket stuff. Thanks for sharing the process, it's making my build a breeze!
