Yup...got a photo on my thread of the Marine 3rd unit...how cool is that...it's a V with a small 3 in it...so it also could be Valerie 3
Looks like a two tone...black and white...but I was thinking of using blue instead of black
Any Suggestions?

Those chevrons are usually white or black in colour depending on the vehicle's colour for contrast using Mk1 Eyeball or using thermals. I suggest use white. The number you see either denotes which platoon the tank is. IIRC the Marines use[d] a similar but different system than the Army with these chevrons etc.
To give an example my 1/35 M1 "Another Episode":
Chevron pointed up - Alpha Company
Small square dot inside - First Platoon
Tank's bumper code is A13 - Alpha Company, 1st Platoon, 3rd tank
Chevron pointing up with number 51 inside - 1-64 Battalion, Alpha Company, 1st platoon (note: this chevron with numbers inside is different from the other chevron that has dots inside. The former is for battalion, company, platoon; the latter is simply a reflection of the bumper codes so company, platoon, tank) (2nd note: AFAIK only seen during OIF 2003)
Three red rings/stripes around the bore evacuator of the gun - 1st platoon, 3rd tank
The system I guess changes from time to time. The above is found during OIF in 2003.
Kei is the commander of Saunders, right? So this is a command tank, yes? I don't have my notes on hand now to designate a company commander's tank but will let you know asap.

Company commander's tank would have no square dots or numbers inside the chevron it seems.
Platoon leader's tank is usually first tank so A11 is the platoon leader of 1st platoon, Alpha Company. Platoon sergeant's tank is usually the third tank so A13 is his tank. Second and fourth tanks are wingmen tanks of the platoon leader and platoon sergeant respectively.

The chevron with dots inside seem to appear only in OIF. They used dots to denote platoon so as to distinguish the other chevron system that denotes battalion-company-platoon.
So it seems that ordinarily, the chevrons with numbers system would denote company-platoon designation.
So the chevron with number 3 you mentioned would mean 3rd platoon of that company.
Chevron pointed up - Alpha Company
Chevron down - Bravo
Chevron right - Charlie
Chevron left - Delta

Can't tell to well because the crew is blocking the view but I think I see an M1A1 commanders copula. I think that is a M1A1 which had no phone box or the smaller junction box above it.

It is a Marine M1A1 as they don't have any other M1 variant in service. Dead giveaway are the smoke grenade launchers. From this link -->
https://www.flickr.com/photos/expertinf ... 354877172/ it says it's taken in 2006 in Kuwait, but says during Operation Enduring Freedom. OEF is in Afghanistan, OIF is in Iraq, so I guess they got both operation names mixed up.
Judging from the colour, it is possible it came from a POMCUS site, and hence lacking the tank-infantry phone on the back as the tank would've been sitting in POMCUS without receiving such upgrades unlike other tanks from CONUS et al.

ADDED NOTE: I neglected to thank you guys for all the research you did...it did help a lot...it also made it harder to decide just which way to point the chevron...also where to put it
Got it figured out I think...though...it's interesting that going with a white chevron usually means it has to have some kind of black outline

LOL...you may not like what I ended up doing ATC....did Bravo company tank 2 designated by two dots in the chevron ....I did it like that because it kind of looks like it's smiling
