Herr Dr. Professor wrote: Tue Apr 11, 2023 10:38 pm Ah, you did go for the ubiquitous HiLux assault wagon! What hoot--and realistic, too. It is 1/16 scale, but those tires could only be... Oops, I'd better shut up. I will be interested to see the replacement tires and I think you will need to lower the suspension, right? And the fenders will look cut out?
The tyres are too big. Nothing I can do about that until stock shows up.
I have lowered the suspension by removing the springs out of each tower and cutting them in half. Seems easy but the poor thing had to be torn apart to access the screws that hold the towers in place. Once done the travel is almost nil but should look a bit more realistic.

Since I had the thing in bits to lower the triple shock, WP hi-rise suspension ( :lolno: ) to get the ride height down, I figured I might as well get rid of the bright red shine as well.
A lot of sanding to take the gloss off the plastic and key the primer.
I have no idea what the body is made of on these WPL Toyotas, but its really glossy and really tough
Once sanded off, belted 3 coats of Tamiya TS-33 Dull Red out of a spray can.
Looks better already

Been assembling the KPV-44 from Live Resin. Not a simple task as no instructions and quite a lot of clean up to do.
The resin is a bit fragile too, especially getting bits off the supports.
Hell of a gun by all written accounts.
I've made the normally wheeled carriage be 'adapted' to sit in the rear of the Hilux as I assume it might have been in a real situation.
Simple cross beam on the tray floor, with the carriage welded to a couple of uprights, and the ground spades oxy-cut off & welded to some angle iron on the wheel arches.
Rather than a high & complex mount that could offer a 360 degree rotation arc and require a fair old lump of fabrication to stay put, I went with a butchered original mount that can be operated from the tray by a sitting crewman, behind a shield(that I am yet to make)which should enable a fairly safe environment from which to pour fire onto distant targets.
On a practical level, if the vehicle suffered a mechanical failure or was damaged in a fight, the gun and tray if not disabled could easily be transferred to another vehicle of the same make.
I used some sliced-off nut & bolt moldings that came off my late StuG to look like fasteners that secure the gun to the tray. Super glue will be the final binder that joins the gun & mount to the tray after both are painted. The resin is just too 'iffy' to handle during the reassembly process and the gun looks quite intricate to paint with all its nooks & crannies.
The size of the weapon is evident when compared in place to the same scaled vehicle body.
There is a flap which is the battery access that I need to keep clear of too, that also alters the options for rear artistic layout. Kind of dead space.

Ive just done a bit of 'creative calculation' and this thing has a better Gun MM/ton firepower ratio than a Jagdtiger :wtf:
A J.T. has 1.82mm/ton
This Hilux has 4.83mm/ton :shifty:

Hmmm...............know which one I'd rather back meself in eh ;)

Got a shield made and mounted.
Looking at the way it’s shaping up, there won’t be a lot of spare room for the ammo stowage I had in mind, but it still should be a busy looking Ute.
Dust effects on the windows and a fair old lot of stone chipping in the right places I hope will get it befitting the theme.

Added an ammo can to the turret roof for ready use, and to keep the flag in place.
Not much left now, the pickaxe is now proving a pain in the but-tox to get sorted of all things!
