just had a thought on my KT. the photo's show a big 11 on the turret and the picture that sax kindly found for the cammo shows the 11, but is this an allied counting system from when they were destroyed, or a div number? found a photo of 02 with what again looks like a hand painted number in a totally different font( is that the right word for numbers?) . hopefully they wont be aliied counts.

Their call signs,I just checked this new book on the KT's,it specifically describes the size and color of the call sign numbers for the King Tiger Units, seems we have a mystery here? One which may take some digging to determine the reason for the odd call signs?

Jeff, this information from another forum via a Google search.Units issued Porsche King Tigers, now another mystery is my photo of a Porsche with Grossdeutschland crewmen.
- Panzer-Lehr-Division got 5 Tiger II with Porsche turret in March 1944.
- Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 503 got 12 vehicles on June 12, 1944 and another 12 in late July.
IIRC a few tanks were given to the Ersatzheer (Reserve Army) at Kummersdorf and Paderborn in early April 1944.
Also very few vehicles were given to the SS-Ersatzheer in late '44. That last one would be the only Waffen-SS/Tiger II (Porsche) connection I read about.

Ok,I looked up the 503 in the book King Tiger Heavy Tank, they received the KT'S mentioned above but also received another 29 and were then relocated to the Eastern front saving only two Porsche King Tigers from France,Oddly this is the only unit in the book which does not list the call sign color or size? More digging on this one.

From what i read, it was another king tiger in its own unit after the trans broke. Pretty much all the tanks in this unit broke down and were blown up by their crews.

wow that isn't what I expected thanks for the info very intereasting, I have heard the tales of the KT's braking down a lot but thought they put charges in them to blow them up rather then using them for target practice, would like to have seen it must have made a bang!

I think if a Tiger (maybe others also) was unrecoverable crew had to get order from the H himself to detroy it. Their even carried the charges to detroy them so wouldn't lost the technology to the allies.

sax, from what i have read on here its flk 316, not sure sure if it is a division, not really sure on divs, regiments and what ever. " i just drive them, i dont know what makes them work" lol. i do know that the tank i'm building is one oe six delivered to 316, andf none of them fired a shot in anger, they all broke down. germans, good engines, crap gearboxes. sounds like a jaguar.
