Re: HL metal gearbox

One of my 3:1 gearboxes stripped the final drive gear after only 2 minute running on carpet,
even though I'm being sent a replacement I have decided to upgrade to brass.

just looking at my second gearbox and the way the gears dont run true and now seeing your video
convinced me that the upgrade is a good idea.

The HL metal gearboxes(like the ones shown above) are of amazingly poor quality. Just cast pot metal gears with no real attention to quality.

Although it costs almost as mucha s the tank, the upgrade to Asiatam metal gearboxes is a huge improvement.

The steel Asiatam boxes, not brass are in my 20+lbs Tiger 2-13 and are still in perfect condition. I have run them in once with cam grinding compound. After that I have run my tank through every thing without a problem. You guy's should hook up with Dave(forgebear) and get a set, these are not very expensive but they really take the running with out issues. Now these are not the best, that would be the set XRAD posted. But these do last,at least in my Tiger S13 they have lasted well over a year and maybe 50 hours total run time. cheers Saxondog

Agree with Sax: There are at least TWO types of the cast gearboxes. The ones that come with the tank and the aftermarket type. I have a set like Sax shows and they are also very well made for the price. I think they are called the 'new' 3:1 gearbox, but I thought they were from HL???

I have bought probably 6 of the 3:1 'brass' type gearboxes from Asiatam/ All have been perfect except one. Had a very poorly drilled gear. I had to take apart and redrill and shim with brass tube.... So cost does not really equal quality.

Also: See my write up on the Impact gearboxes in:

I Have upgraded to the Asiatam brass now but my stock plastic gears lasted about a month with metal tracks in loose soil and on lots of steep grades and grass. 8O My friend on the other hand had a bulldog with the pot metal boxes that only lasted about a week. :problem: so much for quality control

The Asiatam boxes I posted look very similar to the H/l boxes with one difference the bearings. The bottom picture is from WelshDragons site, When Steve sold me the Asiatam hull these were part of the drive package. After cam grinding treatment they ran very smooth with a big reduction in noise. The torque with the Gruapner Speed 400 motors is amazing, these are good for metal tracks and sprockets and have lasted since March of 2009.

One other point, from time to time I give them a good spray with silicone spray lubricant, and my control arms are tapped 3.5mm with shoulder bolts for axles which eliminate any play in the wheels so the tracks rum tight this is the key to my Tigers good running record. All the little mods add up in the end, and the result a very strong, durable and fun Tank to drive. One other improvement,12-tooth pinion gears with grub screw for shaft position.

Here is a link to the excellent gearbox calculator Swathdiver designed, it is a free download and has a wide variety of drive combinations. cheers Saxondog

I bought a set of the Asiatam 3:1 brass low-profile gearboxes that xrad posted a picture of, but found a problem with them that I didn't forsee. I got them about 18 months ago and just broke them out last week to use on a Profiline Brummbar kit (the stock Heng Long gearboxes were too tall, and interfered with the movement of the gun).
Anyway, I noticed that the final drive axle (the one that you bolt the sprocket onto), is made entirely of brass and was bent at the point where it comes through the frame. I don't know if it was received that way when I bought them, or it somehow happened in the intervening timeframe; but I certainly can't hold the vendor responsible for it after all this time.
Rather than try and straighten it, I decided to replace both of them (under the belief that it's a weak point, and that maybe metal tracks and hard running will just cause it to bend again). I had an extra set of Impact final drive axles, and used those. All you have to do is drive off the pinion gear from the Impact axle, and use the original final gear from the Asiatam axle (it uses setscrews to hold it in place). The only modification I had to do was to file flat spots on the Impact axle for the Asiatam setscrews to bite down on).
And what is the moral of the story that I learned? That when you receive any parts, (even if you're just going to squirrel them away for a future project), look over everything carefully. Play with the gearsets - see how they spin - watch for binding or misalignment, etc. Too late to try and get the dealer to fix the problem after that.

Sass: Can you get those impact axles seperately?

Xrad, Do you know Bob Hearn? He owns ETO ARMOR and I believe they sell Impact gearboxes, might try him. Saxondog
