Re: HL tanks: adding armor textures
It is strong, but I believe sometimes it works when the model is viewed from a distance (no I don't mean a mile away), but sitting on a shelf viewed from normal distance, exaggerated texture can do a good job. My M4A1 has exaggerated texture for that reason and my Zimmerit on my German stuff is a bit heavy for the same reason. But I don't photograph close ups like some here can do (mostly because the photo stuff is not in my talents).
Personally I like what you've done with the Sherman.

That's a shirty Derman---unh---dirty Sherman! I I always liked the cast turret version. I learned a way to make a passable lens for the spotlight, one that at least it provides a lens and can be glued on after all the painting is done. If you are interested, I'll explain. I wish there were lenses printed. If you know any sources for lenses over various sizes, I am sure interested.

Hey MW, for my tastes the casting texture is a bit too much, but nothing a bit of sandpaper can't knock down. Buh dat's jus' me! I like the Sherman Minutiae site for reference photos. I usually get back to my tank 3-4 hours later...

Aliexpress has some lenses, but pretty limited size selection--1cm dia and up:Herr Dr. Professor wrote: ↑Wed Jun 19, 2024 4:29 pm That's a shirty Derman---unh---dirty Sherman! I believe Raminator is your man for lenses. He has 3D printed a bunch for his T-34's and they are righteous!

Thank you, Mike! Those sources must be far better than using the make-do solution I had.

Re: HL tanks: adding armor textures
Whatever method you used Mr Wittman just needed to be sanded off over its surface to bring down the highest points & create the uneven surface of casting over all.
Russian stuff was very very rough, the rest of the world-not so.
You did a good job of the concept, but on a Sherman I think they were of a higher standard than the Russian castings !!

ECAM has summed up my models. Best viewed from a mile away. May be a bit heavy, but if that is your first go, then you are braver than me, because it is something I would not attempt. Same with people who imitate the welding and anti-slip coating. Not for me, I just haven’t got the patience. Well done.

I clearly stated that I didn't mean a mile. All of mine are 10 to 30 footers. And I think your finishing is far better than my work!Meter rat wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 5:50 pmECAM has summed up my models. Best viewed from a mile away. Re: HL tanks: adding armor textures
Herr Wittmann: I overdid the rough texture on my first (and only so far) attempt at casting texture. But practice will help us. For me, the trick was determining which parts of the tank should be cast texture and which fabricated metal. And weld lines...unh...gulp!
