Well, when I got your old boxes, I noticed the drive shafts are exactly the same length.
Maybe your chassis isn't quite right on the left (viewed from the rear)

I think you should. Put those new steel gearboxes in it and try the metal sprockets on them.

I could try that, probably after i get the other parts of the sherman running, as it would take me a while to take out the gearboxes

Oh, ok. I would be very interested in the results.
With your problem tank, the plastic running gear was ok, maybe with the metal being slightly wider, and knowing your gearboxes are ok, it could very well be the chassis causing this problem.

If I remember correctly, you only had this problem on the one side, even when you swapped the sprockets around, hence originally thinking there was a gearbox problem.
