My view on this for what it's worth is that when I view the tanks I don't even consider the surroundings or dressing, I look at the tank. How it was built, how it's been modified, how it's been painted/weathered/finished, how much effort and creativity has gone into creating it, and how it reflects the tank on which it is based. All these things. I don't know how anyone else decides how they are going to vote but that's how I approach it. The surround and diarama aspects are (or should be) irrelevant. But that's just my opinion.

Gentlemen,
This is a good discussion! It's not an argument. Lets keep it up. Don't forget to go and post some pics of your latest Beauty in the Photo Thread.

For me it's the whole ambience of the photos

The expression "Why spoil a ship for a ha'pworth of tar" comes to mind.

The guys have spent hours getting the tank to look real - preserve that thought with how you set your tank in the photo.

Well said, Sir. Bravo, and I agree. I don't know one single guy on this forum that's not smart enough to know the difference between the tank and the background. It's Tank OTM, not background OTM, and we all understand that it's the tank that counts. If I ever do enter one I'll do a white screen, just so I don't have to listen to any flack (we gotta five dollar fine for whinin') but it will be as I drive it, and some of mine have drivers or Tank Commanders. And whether I'm supposed to or not, you guys probably already know that I'll post video, even if I don't have the village anymore. I still got a backyard (that's what we Yanks call a garden). :O :O :O

And every single guy on this forum is smart enough to appreciate a tank in a realistic background.

Why would you "Cut your nose off to spite your face?"

I'm with your Gary, I prefer a plain back ground, if memory serves my su-152 was on a plain white background ;)

This again ?

Well I'm confused

Trying to do things to engage the membership, encourage high achievement and courage to be openly judged for ones effort.........for no actual reward..............
To submit knowing the chance of having that highest accolade is unlikely, but the spirit of putting in & having a go prevails above pride or ego....

Yet still there is sniveling & criticism over crews, backgrounds, indoors, outdoors, upwards, downwards, black, white etc etc blah bloody blah
It's not Formula 1.......

:/ :/ :/

Vote for the TANK you like.................regardless of the picture & supporting props,or, because of, who cares what you feel tips it over to the vote for you- its YOUR vote & no one is going to judge you...............

OR, lets just dump it so we all feel its fair & no one gets any feelings hurt eh........................

I don't understand why this is a big thing. Each person can present their tank however they want, countryside, plain background, whatever. At the end of the day the competition allows members to showcase their work, inspire others with ideas, and generally provide a showcase of what the members have been up to. Why get into big discussions about background/no background/ whatever......

Let the tanks do the talking

Interesting choice of metaphor, as my Mom used to say that all the time when I was a stubborn little brat. @)

I'm not doing anything purposely to harm myself, simply presenting the tank, and only the tank. But my main point is, present your tank any way you want to. While I may appreciate and admire your background efforts or photo technique, I won't let it sway me in evaluating the tank itself. We have had this discussion before, and I believe it was decided ... Present your tank any way you want to.

I'm a bit concerned I might get static about video, as I think that just might have an influence. If presented with two tanks, both of which look just great, but one runs more realistically and smoothly, that just might influence my decision as to which tank I think is the best. The background doesn't matter, as that's only there for that photo, but the way a tank runs is a different story.

I have as yet to post any of my work to the TOTM, but if and when I do I believe I'll take Tiggr's words to heart and present my tank not only in white, but in a variety of photos and videos, just to show it in different lights.

Example: two photos of the same tank

If nothing else, it gives me a chance to show off my accessories. @) @)

And I myself enjoy seeing a good staged photo, so I hope everyone will present their tank in a variety of situations, but most importantly, that they present their tanks any way they want to, and be secure in the knowledge that we're just voting on the tank. The eye candy is just for fun.
