Re: Taigen King Tiger
I did the fender removal, and managed to make a neat job of it. I took pics so that anyone else who is thinking of doing it can see what is involved. I sanded out the joining strips both sides to make it more accurate (or as accurate as it seems to be going by all of the pics I have looked at). Also went all around the hull filling and sanding all of the accessory holes, filled them in, and gave it a quick blast of primer to check that I hadn't missed anything.
Nirotek actually got in contact today and said that I should send the tank back so that they could examine it, I told them that after reading the numerous online reports about gullible customers sending their goods back and then waiting months without either a replacement or a refund there was no way that I was taking the risk. Quite apart from which I don't think that they would want it back now...

Re: Taigen King Tiger
We're you able to install that little piece of plastic card without trimming the part of the lower hull?
It's looking good so far. Nitrotek contacted you back? I didn't realize a blizzard in hell was in the weather for cast for today.

Re: Taigen King Tiger
It was 10mm wide and came to bang on level with the bottom of the lower hull track cover. I will be covering it with zimmerit so the join will be invisible. I looked at the Atak kit and see that it includes parts for the Tamiya that I wouldn't use, I may either do my own or just buy sheets and cut them to size. The zimmerit 'slots' are 10mm wide judging by the one at Bovington. If I do it with Milliput and it turns out rubbish I can just remove it and buy the sticky stuff.jackalope wrote:We're you able to install that little piece of plastic card without trimming the part of the lower hull?

The girl at Nitrotek said I was being 'a bit harsh', which made me chuckle!!

Re: Taigen King Tiger
The zimmeret wouldn't go below the fenders unless it was applied after the fenders fell off. I would also say the camo should stop at the fender line as well and the portion from under the fender should be the tanks base color or primer.
Re: Taigen King Tiger
Very nice,I've noticed over the that tamiya has some real contenders now.thats good for us ,competition always makes rival manufacturers improve there products,I built a custom tamiya King tiger a few years ago and it currently weighs in at a little over 13lbs I would be curios as what your taigen weighs .

Re: Taigen King Tiger
Zimmerit was standard fitment when the first run of KT's was built, the Porsche version was the initial 50 tanks so they would all have had it applied at the factory. Looking at the archive pics of tanks with the fenders missing they all have zimmerit extending down to the bottom of the hull sides, which would tend to support this. The stuff is so messy that trying to apply it along a plumb line and then attach the fenders would have been very time consuming and difficult.jackalope wrote:The zimmeret wouldn't go below the fenders unless it was applied after the fenders fell off. The Porsche KT at Bovington doesn't have any zimmerit as it wasn't a battle tank, it was one of the prototypes. There is no loaders hatch on the back of the turret.
@Titan. Tank weight isn't really a problem for me, they are either sat on a shelf or running around a flat floor at a tank meet. The only time they get run outdoors is at an outdoor show, which is maybe once a year.

Hmmmm. Cool. Apologies I must have been misinformed, certainly glad you knew better.
The camo would continue under the fenders as well?
I think I was thinking of the Tiger I.

Tanks are a tricky thing, take a look at the exhaust shrouds on the back of the one in the pic above? I've never noticed those before.

Re: Taigen King Tiger
Decided to do my own zimmerit using milliput, just one side left to do, but it has to be the most tedious job in the world. I would have preferred to use the Atak but it would have been impossible to fit it around the solidly glued on Taigen parts.
