I think that's the gunner's scope area, but I'm not sure what the ribbing is for either. I've never noticed that before.

I think the Stug III was the most mass produced German tank in WWII.

The ribbing is basic spall protection. No idea if this was effective at deflecting anything bigger than an A/T rifle round, but was there to reduce the funneling effect of the armour up to the arpeture.
Nice kit though, and that barrel sure does make for great detail.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity about the ribs on the armor leading into the sight aperture. Herman, it is a extremely well designed kit. Almost assembles itself. Almost zero flash and every mounting tab drops right into it's assigned slot, hole, etc without any filing or sanding. It has my enthusiasm high for doing an early Stug lll. The color will be Panzer Grey with shadow\pin wash and weathering. I am sort of locked in to grey due to it being a 1941 version. I went out and bought an accessory chain for it this weekend and will add some small * chuckles* bits of stowage that I have laying around in spares for 1/35 scale tanks. The kit came with parts for a later Stug as well so there are tools aplenty. Tamiya really did this one up right. Now to find a resin or plastic upper somewhere if I am to continue in 1/16.

I know Mato makes a Stug, not sure if you can get body parts individually from them.

I'd like to use a HL or Taigen lower and mate it to an accurate resin\plastic upper for an early Stug. Otherwise, there will be a _lot_ of chopping and sanding to get the Ausf F upper to resemble a Ausf B

Searching around for left over Profiline resin sets, I discovered that Asiatam sells them now. I found exactly what I was looking for: http://www.asiatam.com/product_info.php ... f-a-b.html So the possibility of a working 1/16 Stug lll Ausf B just got a lot better. ;o) The 1/35 version is complete now save for final paint and weathering. Tamiya makes a great kit in any scale. Pictures:

note the round holes on the sprocket... those are the one's Sass recommended I use when I do mine

Even though the A/B model doesn't fit into my GUP genre...I like the look and concept of this one...think it will be a fun runner ...the Panzer IIIs are already pretty nimble tanks...I really like my first Stug...this one having the shorter barrel.. will make it able to turn much quicker than my current G

That is the basic paint scheme that I had picked, early Barbarossa. Tamiya's decal set is pretty inclusive as well giving markings for three versions with the fender striping. It will turn out well and scale up nicely to 1/16 when the time comes. I don't know about schoolgirls as a crew here tho'. ;o)
