birgers trailer for full tracked Tiger I 60to tractor

Post by birger »

Ok guys,

after I finished my full tracked 60to Tiger I tractor, this baby needs something to pull, of course.

You remember the design of the tractor? Here is a little reminder.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

What kind of trailer should a beast like this pull?

What else than a flat bed trailer. Especially for moving heavy 60to tanks like the Tiger I + II.

The whole team should also be able to do its work in rough territory.

To prevent the whole team from rolling over, the trailer gets a dolly and the tractor got a 360° movable tow bar (see tractor report).

Let´s start with the dolly.

To make the whole design easy to rebuild, I used the suspension from the HL-Tiger and spare wheels from Playmobil. That is the cheapest and easiest way to get this baby rolling.

And now the first pictures:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After the dolly is designed, let´s design the trailer.

Of course the two ramps are missing. Those will be designed next.

Image

To guaranty total movement the lower coupling can swing forward and backwards, the upper one can swing sidewards.

Image

Image

If you remove the two decks you can see how the trailer grid is constructed.

This kind of grid gives more stabilization to the trailer and reduces the total trailer weight.

Image

If you take a look from down under, you can see how much space and ground clearance this trailer has.

Image

Image

To show you the dimensions, I copied the tractor and put it on top of the trailer.

Image

Image

On the next picture you can see, that the trailer fits the tanks width.

Image

Image

Well you might say this one will be to wide to be used on streets and trains. That is true. It is meant to transport broken vehicles from their place of destruction to the nearest repair station. Theoretically this trailer can be pushed together to make it smaller for street transportation. As I said theoretically. This opportunity would make the model to complicate.

Next step will be to design the ramps.

After designing the ramps, the construction is finished.

So at the end of the construction part you´ll see the pictures of the finished trailer.

All lashing points and the trailer stands are added.

The only things that are missing are some details like tow chains and a cable winch. Those will be added after building the trailer.

And now see the last construction pictures.

After posting this result in different German forums a few guys mentioned that the number of wheels might be not enough for a weight of 60to or more. Well after reconsidering the fact, they were right. So I added some more. Take a look.

And after:

Ok, let´s get them milled.

It is already milled by Christian Ludwig. 2D-Mill. And it is already built. I am translating the reports into englisch. So during the next two weeks you will see the result excluding the paintjob. That isn´t done, yet.

Awesome work, would ypu make them acsiliable to tge public? one question though: with that many wheels would you not need steering axles on the trailer otherwise turning corners would involve dragging the trailer sideways?!

Well I already drove the whole set. It works fine. Only problem was, when I transported a 8Kg Tiger my tractor had not enough grip upphill. So I removed the metal tracks and put some plastic ones on.

Didn´t try that one yet.
And yes, this one shall be available in Christian Ludwigs Shop.

Get in contact with him to ask for it. He didn´t list it, yet.

Well, after the kit finally has arrived I can start building. Let´s start with the chassis and the wheels. Because I use the same suspension you already know from the HL-Tiger, we need to fix the sleeves first. So we prepare the frames side walls.

Image

Then we separate the wheels from the axles. Those ones are from Playmobil and available as spare parts.

Image

Open the center holes to 4mm.

Image

Mount the suspension arms and smush the wheels to them by using the ordinary HL-Tiger axles.

Image

And it works.

Image

Here you see all wheels mounted. Dolly follows later.

Image

For the whole set we need 28 wheels including the dolly.

Now let´s do the cross struts.

Image

Image

Image

Mounting the frame side walls and the spacers.

Image

Image

Preparing and mounting of the main frames.

Image

Image

Image

Just to see the dimension I put my S33 aside.

Image

And here come the front beams.

Image

After completing the beams I assembled the trailer supports (9 pieces each).

Not in use:

Image

In use:

Image

Front beam has been completed.

Saddle plate is mounted.

The two track plates are added but not glued, yet.

Before gluing they need to be completed with some accessories.

Image

And tried it with my S33.

Image

The trailer width fits the tank.

The whole set needs to be able to run in heavy terrain, too.

Therefore the saddle plate of the trailer is movable, too.

In combination with the plate of the dolly it is highly flexible.

Image

Image

Image

After I watched the chassis of the trailer I imagined how long it will last without metal sleeves and plastic swing arms.

So I made 28 metal sleeves and prepared 28 metal swing arms.

Image

Image

Image

Now I can build the dolly. It is the same procedure as the one with the trailer.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then it got its drawbar.

Image

The plates lock is working, too.

Closed:

At least the mudguards.

Now I can combine the set. The two ramps are not finished, yet.

Image

Well, that is long, I say.

Image

Tried my 313 to see the dimensions.

Image

A Kingtiger fits also. But it has to be uploaded back first.

And finally the ramps are finished and mounted.

Without load:

Image

And with load:

To reduce the weight for the ramps they touch the ground.

A few pictures to show how to unload a Tiger.

Well, the rough work is done. Let´s do some details.

To fix the ramps during transportation, we need some securing chains. All the needed parts are from a jewelry 99ct store.

Image

Image

We also need some chains to fix the tanks. Therefore I got real chain locks and Playmobil hooks.

Image

Front:

Image

Back:

Image

Ok, while testing one of the chains ripped off. So I decided, these small ones are for show and easy terrain. That is ok. To really work with the set in heavier terrain I need tougher ones. So I improvised.

That´s the result:

Image

That should do it.

Well, what is still missing?

Right. The cable winch.

That will be the next post.

Till then, here is a little final picture of the whole set including the tractor.

At the end of this report there are a few details to add.

The tractor now has an outlet for the trailers winch.

Image

I added a switch to the tractors engine compartment to switch from driving to winch.

Image

Here is the plug of the winch.

Image

The winch is a motor with a mounted gear and a self made cable drum. This wire thing in the picture is to be used as a cable guy for the drum.

Image

I combined the winch with a double pully. Here in transport position.

Image

Image

I also added some securing chains to the ramp locks.
Image

And then there is something I have to reconstruct. When I drove downhill, the trailer pushed the dolly to buckle. So I have to increase the distance of the two axles.

Image

Image

I will post the changes when they are done.

At last I created a tow plate to tow the vehicles onto the trailer. This one fits the Tiger, Kingtiger and PIII.

Image

Well, this ist he end oft he report.

The next part will be to show you the painted set. Until that this one is finished.
