New to R/C Tanks but not R/C

Hello,
I want to try to get into the Tank scene but I'm not sure of which kits are good for a beginner. I've been building models for 30+ years, so I plan to modify it with my personal taste.
I'm just looking for some incite on which kits give you the best quality in the $60-$150 range so I can get 1 for my son to enjoy and give the best ability to modify when I get "that itch".
I just can't leave anything stock...lol.

I guess what I'm saying is which kits are good for my son to play with and which are more of an intermediate for me so I won't get bored with being able to keep modding.

Hey Mike,

Welcome to the forum and I suggest maybe starting out with a Heng Long or Taigen. Good little runners but there are tons of accessories for when you are bitten by the Mod Bug. Lots of vendors out there also sell these accessories but check out the Recommended Vendor forum first. I can speak from experience that the two best vendors out there are Steve from Welsh Dragon and Dave from Forgebear. Both are members here and are highly respected throughout the site. Oh Mike you made my heart swell with joy when you said you cannot leave anything stock, you are so welcome to a group of people whose greatest pleasure comes from making sure that whatever tank it is, it most certainly will not remain stock. The advice offered about recommended dealers is spot on, if you go down one line you will discover the blacklisted dealers, WHATEVER YOU ARE TOLD AVOID THESE PEOPLE. we have found out the hard way they will cost you money and aggravation and whatever is left is anger. Thanks for the welcomes, since I posted I've been trolling the net for Henglong's looking forward to getting 2 at the same time other wise my 9 year would never leave me along till he gets his sooo...

I've seen a few on ebay from canada that come already upgraded with metal gearboxes and treads for a few bucks more. My question after seeing a few E-bay sellers in the "Blacklisted forum" should I pull the trigger?
I plan to detail it with weathering and upgrade any internals that I deam not up to snuff. I presume they have motor mods. What size motors do these use? 400's or larger like RC cars?

This should be a fun venture....
As for Modding you should see my 450 HP twin turbo Audi.... Yes I can drop money like a hot potato. Not that the wife always approves. Sigh

Hi Mike, I'm new myself, but recently bought a couple of HL tanks. From my limited experience, I'd ask yourself the question if you want BB or IR tanks. If you think you and your son will want to battle, I think the IR would be a better choice. But IR models are pretty rare with UK shops.

Mike, I cannot speak for the United States or for Canada but in the U K most stores will not get new stock before mid August, that is from the importers lips! As to buying from the blacklist no one can stop you all we can do is advise you, few people come away unharmed, for instance, TANKZONE owes me just under £500 and there are too many similar examples that a lot of us can give about other blacklisted dealers.Whatever you decide please take care, good luck. shaun

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum . we are pritty open minded about R/C anything on here. A cheaper way to get in to this is do what i have done/am doing and that is scratch build then you are buying parts as you need them. Yes all up my Scratch build DUKW will be worth $250-$350 AUD but that payed for little by little as i build it.

Or the other way i sean a few people on here do and for my next project maby. With Tamiyas gearbox kits at the 1/35 kits it is posable to mecanise a stasic model any way jump on you tube and look up 1/35 rc
