Turret rotation control for L/R movement

Post by MichaelC »

Hi all,

Has anyone thought about using the turret rotation to control the Left/Right track movement on an assault gun/fixed superstructure ? I am curious to know what needs to be put in electronics wise. Would be it something like a switch when it gets the turn signal would give power to the left/right tracks ?

Hi MichaelC,
I have no idea how it could go. But a few little thoughts for that.

Think about how is the real control in the tank, for the vehicle rotation we have the driver, for the turret rotation we have another person, our gunner. Both receive their commands from their commander, and these commands could be at each time different.
I'm not a tank commander and certainly not at this time. For me it's a question of tactics. If our opponent has not seen our assault gun, I would imagine, that the commander let the tank turn to a point, that the next opponent is left or right from the cannon. He let the opponent drive into the shot field and had so the chance after a first shot, with turning the gun barrel to shot a second time. It's different, if our opponent has seen our assault gun. Then I would imagine, that our commander let the tank turn in the coarse direction to the opponent, stops shortly and turn then the gun barrel to the target - shot.
These (and similar) thoughts must be observed to implement such a function in the control for our assault gun.
I hope this could help.

Hmmm..... That is an interesting observation. In other words, I guess the driver will have be the one to provide the coarse movement and the gunner would use the limited traverse (which most assault gun do have. Very limited). I guess this is similar to the electrical/hydraulic traverse which is fast but inaccurate for the gunner and they would switch to manual for the fine turning.

I am not too sure if this has an implication on implementing the turret traverse which is not used at all in fixed superstructure assault gun so that it will "translate" into Left/Right track movement.
