windows,vista ,cannot connect to updates,failure?

for some reason or other there are no auto updates ? can,t connect to updates, the laptops works ok ? every time you try, update all you get is update failed to connect, any one any ideas ? no windows 7/8, is not the answer,i like vista have this problem with xp to, so help please if pos,
