Metal Track colouring

Post by MichaelC »

Hi all,

Just pick-up the HL Sherman and it has these really shiny silver metal tracks. I am not looking to aged it or rust it, but what is the best way to tone down the shininess and the silvery colour ? Should I spray it or paint it ? I am looking to make it more gun metal type darker greyish colour but doesn't want colour bits all over the place if I start running around. I have some plastic tracks on the tank as well and they are black so I would try to make them the same colour, whatever I ended up with the metal track I will do the same to the black plastic ones.

Okay found it in our outdoor/hunting store but it says it gives you gun shine ?!?! Does it actually change the silvery colour too ? I don't want it to be shiny unless it is a more dull shine.

Hi! 'Humbrol' gun metal enamel paint goes on very evenly with a brush. Adding matt black will darken it to your taste. You will need to spray the metal tracks with 'etch primer' (available from car body workshop outlets) first, or the paint won't adhere properly. The plastic tracks would also need a 'primer' coat but as you will have a tin of 'etch primer' it works with plastics as well. :D

That's exactly what I am looking for......... Thank you !

ska2d2, I will try the Gun blue first as it seems a little more straight forward but thanks also for the info.

Michael Hi if you go to hints and tips you will find an entry marked SILVER TRACKS, there is some helpful tips there, I used the KURUST to take the shine of my tracks, it dulls them down and they look really good, a word of advice if you decide to use GUN BLUE it is a very hazardous product and rubber gloves, goggles and a face mask are the minimum precautions to take but it will blacken your tracks. Do take care.apart from paint I think all the other methods suggested will destroy your plastic tracks. shaun
I think I am about to upset someone :haha:

I haven't treated my HL tracks to anything and the shine has naturally moved to dull silver.

hi, if it's heng long tracks youve got kurust will dull them a bit , if there like mine there made of alloy not steel so i don,t think gun blue would work.
