Futaba 6EX or 6J for Leopard 2a6

Post by rock »

Hello,

I have been seeking my first proper radio gear for my leopard 2a6. The options coming out are Futaba 6Ex and 6J. The reason of picking these radios are the reasonable price and multiple modes which allows me to use only one Tx for different Rx (tanks). I am confusing which one is suitable for controlling TAMIYA tanks (i will not use it for air plane or helis)?

However, I have never been used any 'professional' radio gear and I know it has different mode, such as mode 1 and 2. My second question is which mode is normally used in the UK? For controlling the tank, how to ensure the throttle or both sticks is located in the central position rather than at the lowest position?

Any suggestions and recommendations are welcomed.

Thank you.

I like the 6J, have 2 of them.
The 6J uses the same spring kit for self centering the sticks as the 4YF:

Thx mate,

I have asked one of our local model shop for centering the joystick for me. They got quite good deal for 6j in that two receivers are included. I have been waiting for the answer from the shop and hope they will do the modification for me.

Word of caution:

The Futaba 2.4 radio system is not completely compatible with the Tamiya Leopard 2s T-07 DMD.

You will not be able to use the 2.4 transmitters trim tabs to access lights, main gun stabilization and shut down features. The T-07 DMD is an older design and I guess that is the issue.

If you do not need or want all the rc bells and whistles, a Futaba 2.4 radio will operate just the basic features. I know I have set my Leo up both ways and opted for the Futaba FM set over the 2.4 Futuba.

Solution, I use a Futaba FM ground radio for my Danish Army ISAF Forces Afghan-Desert-Leopard.

Hi John,

I contacted the local model shop and they suggested me to get 6J instead of 6EX. They said 6J can be operated on any mode and also has the self centring sticks. I didn`t notice the T-07 is not compatible with 2.4 GHz radio. I did see some 1 on web using 2.4 ghz for their tamiya tanks so i am assuming all tamiya tanks with dmd units compatible with 2.4 ghz radio.

Thats is really annoying as i dont want a simple 4 ch radio to start with. Initially, I was thinking to get a Spectrum 6 ch radio but some 1 said it wont be compatible with Tamiya tanks. Since the futaba is used as the basic radio brand for the demonstration of all tamiya tanks, I have been thinking it might be a good choice.

My questions are:

is that possible to operate all lights through 2.4 ghz radio?
is that possible to start and turn off the engine sound through a 2.5 ghz radio?

Answers:
possible to operate all lights through Futaba 2.4 ghz radio using digital trim tabs? NO, but turn on the lights at the DMD Unit.
possible to start and turn off the engine sound through a Futaba 2.4 ghz radio using digital trim tabs? NO!
possible to start gun stabilization through a Futaba 2.4 ghz radio using digital trim tabs? NO!

Note:
Tamiya RC Forums recommends the Futaba 4YF 4-Channel FM for the Leo 2 and that is what I went to after pulling the 2.4 system 4YF from my Leo. FM works fine, visit this source:

FYI: You might be able to program in the wanted features with a 6 channel 2.4 radio, and fine tune the trim tabs, but I have not attempted that, ask around.

Hi John,

Thanks for ur advice. I am take it in mind. Personally, I still love 2.4 ghz radio but it is worthless if it loses too much functions.

Regards,
