helmet insignia

I always thought that the badges on helmets was defined so : SS sign on right and WH on right is this correct ? Although i've seen pics of troops with the swastika on a red shield on the left and right. I have seen luftwaffe troops (white eagle) on the left too ! Can anyone shed some light ?
