t-81 tracks on sherman
t-81 tracks on sherman
is there any way that t-81 pershing tracks will fit on a tamiya sherman. i wanted t-66 tracks for the sherman but they are expensive. the t-81 look exactly the same as the t-66 so just wondering
Re: t-81 tracks on sherman
I thought that someone might reply to your question, but since no one has; let me try.
First, the T81 and T66 tracks really don't look the same, other than they are both metal. Look closely at the track faces and you'll see the difference.
Second, the Sherman roadwheels are spaced a little further apart than the Pershing ones, so any Sherman track has a wider center guide tooth than Pershing track. That means that you can fit Pershing track to a Sherman, but if you try and use Shermman track on a Pershing, the center guide tooth will be too wide to go through the roadwheels.
Third, you can sometimes swap Sherman drive sprockets asround to fit different Sherman track, but they will not fit the Pershing T81 track holes. The T81 track has it's own drive sprockeet, which is smaller than the Sherman one. So, even if you get a T81 sprocket to put on your Sherman, it will look a bit odd.
I like the look of the T66 tracks also, and have used them on a couple of Shermans. One with the Impact solid-faced drive sprockets that came with the tracks, and one with stock Tamiya (open-web) sprockets. Remember though, that adding metal tracks may mean that you'll need to consider upgrading the drive system to handle the extra weight - gearing down the motors; roadwheels bearings; etc. -Mike
