Hobby Boss Tiger I reanimation - best course?

Post by Treesurgeon »

Hi guys,

First dopey question of my illustrious career. Remember... you were there! :)

I've got a freebie 1:16 HB Tiger I static model that I reviewed on my modelling site, and am tempted to make it RC if I can get the job done cheap enough. I believe that its origins are with a company called WSN, which I'm guessing is part of the Trumpeter/Hobby Boss empire, and has been branded as Torro/Matorro in the past too.

Here's what I'm thinking. I can pick up a HL Tiger I online for around £50, and if I could transfer the electronics, motors and so forth to the HB "case", I'd be very interested in doing so. Is that a goer, or does the WSN/Matorro mould have different requirements for its running gear and turret mechanisms?

Any advice, opinions, tips or chastisement for being a silly newb will be gratefully received as long as it's polite ;)

Mike.

Don't know about the Torro/Matorro connection, but WSN is bascially the RC version of the Trumpeter static models. The three WSN RC model (Tiger I, T34/85 and M16 Half Track) are all branded under Trumpeter on the static side.

I have converted a WSN T34/85 to HL Electronics but I keep the running gear and motor so can't say how difficult it is to take a static one and put in motor/gears etc. I am not too sure if you can get WSN gear enclosure seperately either. WSN (i.e. RC) is not that exepnsive if you can find them so I am not too sure if this is a worthwhile endeavour.

The other option of course would be to try & put the HB upper on the HL lower, resulting in less faffing with electronicals, and only the turret workings to fix. The new Rx18 board gives me a fighting chance... any ideas?

That will work as long as you figure out the mounting. The upper hull from WSN/HB/Trumpeter is much more detail than the HL ones. You will have to figure out turret rotation and barrel elevation. Don't know if the static one even supports recoil. I guess if you can get a HL for cheap then it might be worth while, but alot of work I see ahead of you. Elevation and rotation might not be so simple, and don't even know how you would do the recoil unless the HL has a it already and you can bring them over, but by that time you would have more HL than HB..........

It's making my brain hurt, and I haven't even got a HL kit to play with yet! :haha:
