Video on You Tube

Post by Dietrich »

Hi Guys,
I found this video on You Tube today.........It rather confirms the German name for the Sherman tank as a 'Tommy Cooker' and the British name of 'Ronson' ( Lights First Time Every Time ) ....
Its a good video....but........Keep watching past the section from the History channel to where the film is black and white footage with the annoying 'clacking' sound of the projector...and then watch the close up of the Sherman Tank commander as he bails out, after the Sherman is hit and knocked out by the Panther.....Its a bit of a 'surprise' as you will see...... 8O
Time line of 8:48 and on for those who do not want to watch the whole thing.

Old alumni from my regiment called them Ronson's....
A dose of reality, it was brutal. The Panther knock out sequence shows little mercy too, 2 more rounds while the crew is bailing out...

Here is one of my fav. Panther running around video:

Hi,
I agree, the additional 2 rounds whilst the crew is bailing out is a bit 'Much'...... Unless it was 'Intentional' and a bit of a payback for the dead in the Sherman crew, it is a war and so difficult for us to comment on .....we are just a ' 9 0'clock Jury ' as we used to say at work, or arm chair Generals..........then I guess that we have to say that it might be difficult to see that the Panther is knocked out from a distance ....and that the Pershing crew were just 'making sure' ??.................
.
On a slightly lighter note though I have to say ...that IS a Truly Beautiful Panther. ....... The engine is a joy to hear and the Camo pattern is great and it would actually be quite difficult to spot...until it was too late.....
There is just a certain 'Something' about a FULL SIZE tank rumbling about that unfortunately our 1/16th just can't quite match.....I know that there is the weight issue....and its also about inertia & momentum as well......

Hi

You have a definite point there, as much as I still like my 1/16th KIng Tiger, it can`t compare to my 1/8th late Model Tiger I at full pelt @) the way the big metal tracks clank, the way the very ground shakes when you stand next to the engine bay, the stench of the liquid paraffin from the smoker, the roar and muzzle blast from the pyro when you touch off the `88...I think you get the picture !!!

I call it terrible beauty... I thought of this phrase when I was at an airshow in the 90's after the first gulf war. I admired the aircraft but the destruction anf havoc they rained down on the Iraqs unimaginable....

Tanks same thing, incredible pieces of design and engineering, awesome to watch, but I remember reading about a Canadian infantry company (I think Toronto Scots) who got caught too far forward in a wheat field after D-Day with no armour support and were assaulted by Tigers. Can't even begin to imagine the terror they must have felt....
