Tamiya King Tiger problem

Post by JBdk »

Hi...

I have bought a used Tamiya King Tiger FO It has the T03 ESC and DMD unit installed...Its my first real Tamiya tank I have been running HLs and Tamiyas with Elmod installed for ages, so I don't know how Tamiyas normaly run...but my problem is that when I try to make pivot turn or turn to left side it can't really make it...looks like a lack of power, but when I do it in reverse there is no problem at all...
Then I start thinking...maybe it could be the motors because the right motor got pretty hot compared to the left...so I changed both motors into a couple of brand new Graupner Speed 400...but it did'nt help at all...then I tried to reverse the poles on the motors so it was runing backwards when I pushed the pin on the transmitter forward just to see if that maked any changes but it did'nt...

So now I am pretty lost and are turning to you guys, do any of your have a solution on my problem, or is just normal for Tamiyas having a lack of power compared to Elmod...my first thougt is that one of the FEDs could be burned, but then again then it should'nt could do it in reverse...

Maybe I should metion that it is running on metal tracks making it pretty heavy...

Cheers Jens.

Sounds like you need to reset the Dmd and go through the set up! if the transmitter is not set to the dmd then you mite not be getting enough stick travel on your transmitter so the tank won't turn all the way! Allso the Tamiya king tigers wide tracks don't help it turn well on grass! Welsh dragon models sell a gear reduction kit for the gear boxes it's £60 a bit expensive but they give the tank loads more low down power and it won't struggle then! Allso check your tracks are not two tight!!

Funny you mention the track tension, I have problems with them, they are pretty loose, but I can't figure out how to adjust it...I have tried to do it by the manual but I still think it is too loose...maybe I should have another go at it... :-)

Hi JBdk ,
Sorry to hear about the problems with the Tamiya.
I think that this is what the tensioner should look like ( But without the drilled holes :D )

The inner grey metal alloy disc is directly 'connected' to the outer arm that carries the rear idler wheel. You slacken off the screw, and then move the idler wheel to the correct tension before re-tightening the screw. Unfortunately it is not the best system so I have tried to make it 'Hold' in position better by drilling holes and pinning it in place, but it was a failure... :(

(I have ended up doing another modification , its the alloy plate with the two screw heads visible in the bottom left of the photo.....but that is another story :haha: )

Hi all...

First of all, thanks for all your help...

Well the big kitty is up and running as it should be... 8)

First I tried to reset the DMD it did'nt help...then I had her up and running on a wood block and the right track was jumping up and down...track tension I then thought...so I took the tracks off to get that done...but then I noticed a small piece of metal under the right gearbox it was a piece of a tooth...then I fired her up without tracks and let her go at half trottle and when I tried to hold the sprocket with my hand the motor kept running but the sprocket did'nt move...then I tried the same in reverse and I barely could hold the sprocket...

So I had a go at my parts bucket where I had a spare Tamiya gearbox and changed the gear with the lost tooth with one from my spare gearbox and let it run the gearbox in at half trottle for a hour...put the track back on and adjusted the track tension...then went for a short drive in the driveway and problem solved...
