styrene sheets

Post by jimmy321 »

i am planning on building a m-10 tank destroyer and was wondering what kind of thickness would i need to make to turret. i have never used styrene sheets and know nothing about the thickness and strenght about it. i need a thickness that will not be weak and will not bend easily when i build the model.i will be using a dremel tool to do all the cutting. thanks. also any other feedback you may have on this build would be helpful.

Hi, Check out the EVERGREEN WEB site, they manufacture a wide variety of sheets and profiles. One consideration would be he inner structure or frame work, the sheet strength will be effected a lot by the "free or "UNSUPPORTED" span of sheet material between the frame work.

The 1/16" .0625 being very strong if supported. Carl may be online tomorrow and has done a lot of work with the American conversion stuff using this material.

I am providing a link to his sight. Good luck

I use a selection of thicknesses but find 1.5mm to be the one I use most for scratch building hulls and turrets, larger areas I use 2mm and have built my own sprockets using 4mm.
If you measure the corresponding thickness of our models you will generally use a similar thickness of styrene sheet.
In the UK I use this supplier http://www.envisioncraft.com/gpage1.html good selection of sizes and thicknesses you need A3 if you are doing whole bodies, and quick delivery.

0.80 is what I use, I think that is around 2 mm, I buy bulk stuff though as evergreen is crazy expensive. Go to your local sign shop and ask them if they have any kicking around they would sell you. Just check it for flex as there are some soft opaque plastics used to let light through. I usually buy it in 4' x 8' sheets and cut it into 2' squares with my table saw so I can store it easier. Saves me a ton of cash.
