Heng Long Gearboxes
Being new to all things HL, I just wondered why 3-1 gearboxes were so called. Surely the ratio from motor to drive sprocket is far more than 3-1. Could someone please explain ? Many thanks, regards Geoff C.

Hmmm...... never really measure the gears or count the teeth on them, but 3:1 gear should mean 3:1 ratio. Don't forget that it is not the sprocket that you should be looking at, but the final gear that is attached to the sprocket shaft. I know there are 4:1 ratio gear as well and I don't see why they won't follow the de facto standard.

Geoff
The 3:1 is compared to the heng long standard gearbox. So a 3:1 gearbox should be 3 times slower but 3 times more powerful which you notice say more on grass or carpet doing sharp turns.
Now just to mix things up 3, 4 & 5:1 is just a name manufactures give the the gearboxes in reality there not. Ive had 4:1 gearboxes which are faster than 3:1 but should be slower

Any way hope that helps
Ian.

Re: Heng Long Gearboxes
Also check out the download page there is a gearbox calculator which is a bit old but gives you the idea of the variables I.e. motor, gearboxes, drive sprocket diameter.

Re: Heng Long Gearboxes
Thanks a lot guys, I always thought if you had a 10-1 ratio box, for every 10 revs you put in, you get 1 rev out, like a car g/box. Thanks Geoff

I've just counted the motor revs to final drive and it comes out at 40-1 . Is that sad or what?

That saves everyone else from doing it at least.

Re: Heng Long Gearboxes
Should of used the gearbox calculator as I think it gives that but as a percentage I.e. 40% I think the Asiatam 3:1 work out about 89% or 89:1. So like I said before 3:1 is more a loose name rather than technically correct.Geoff C. wrote:I've just counted the motor revs to final drive and it comes out at 40-1 . Is that sad or what?
