To Red Oxide or Not ? that is the question

Post by nbells »

Gents.

I am about to start my Tamiya Panther G and while looking through numerous threads on here I came across this picture of a Late Panther from the Bov Musuem (which I am led to believe was taken from rikdom's flckr page).

I love the colours of this and since it seems rather unique to me I intend to paint my Panther in a similar scheme.

I know the history and the story of some Panthers and Tigers leaving the factory mid September 44 till late October 44 painted only in red oxide primer and I am wondering if the picture is a true representation of a Panther that would of been done only in the red oxide ? or does anybody know the actual story behind the colour scheme in the picture ?

I have Tamiya's XF-9 Hull Red and I am wondering if this is the correct shade to use ?

Lastly, what would the other colours in the picture be ? Tamiya XF-60 ???

Thanks for any assistance given

Nigel

Based on my research NOT
Especially the Gun Barrel. All research points to a High Heat Semi gloss or satin black on new unpainted gun barrels.
There may have been a short period of time where components were delivered in Red Oxide Primer, but things were quickly switched to olivgrun from the manufacturer (Olive Green)
The directives said use paint sparingly over primer. Not, don't use rotbraun and allow primer to show through as a replacement.
I would believe a tank could have a mix of component part colors. Wheels that are yellow or green or primer. Cupolas, possibly. Sprockets, idlers, etc.
I do not think a hull was left in primer. That is my opinion based on a lot of internet searches and articles.

Is it possible. Yes. Was it widespread? No.
