Beauty of the Beast

Post by Saxondog »

This is a small example fellows, yet what a fine looking piece of work. This is one of few Modern Panzer's in a natural setting painted for war that I do certainly respect. Certainly the Germans and the Russians used some elaborate schemes possibly? Yet we as modelers should push the acceptable with more creative variates.

If your under 85,you were not their. So who is to say what these men and their creative instinct for survival did to enhance their Armors ability to have an advantage? Just saying gang, lets crank it up for the winter season(Australia is excused due to season but please join in) and try some Winter Warfare schemes beyond the dirty mop effect.

Great link Blake.

Do like the modern armour, although difficult to drive on a small battle field due to speed and extra long main gun!

I picked two of my most outrages paints schemes, the Jagdpanther my second tank and the Porsche done for a friend.

My current project must be unique.

A commissioned work and one which I need input from the membership. Perhaps I should have been more specific on this point, but the post is meant to inspire us to our best, straying from he basic and "EXCEPTED" Historical schemes.

If I were in a Jagdpanther and given several gallons of paint to conceal my Gun platform, well lets say I would have the one in the group that survived,as it would be as invisible as possible seen from the sight of my Russian opponent.

To bad the color films did not survive, and we have to guess at much of the "In the Field" schemes. Yet they were done by the crews and I have to think they were logical about the situation facing them, the view through the gun gun-sight.

I think the biggest issue for me doing a German paint scheme is getting it to look random. When you are painting a scale model you see far more of the tank than you would stood their with a 40 ton lump of metal and a paintbrush. That tends to lead to a too even application of colour.

The purpose of camo is to break up outlines, so if you create a regular pattern, it tends not to work as well.

That night Jagdpanther scheme is a good example. The patterns are working to break up the outline and are not too regular. Some of the busier schemes work far less well...but are probably more representative of how the crews did paint them.

You also have to consider the rate at which vehicles were lost due to attrition....both from battle damage and from mechanical failures. I am sure as the war progressed, far less effort was put into paint as the crews become less motivated, more fatalistic and far more weary. It's a shame there are not more records, as I reckon the paintjobs would tell a lot about the tanks crew.

From a purely modelling point of view, I think the paint is why German tanks are more popular as subjects.

VERY NICE Footage of the Leopard in action...
The speeds are amazing....what must the ride be like inside for the crews ??
The 'Dust Cloud' that comes off from the camouflage netted tanks when they fire the main gun......is also astonishing
