Barrel Lock

Boys,

I'm in the process of building a Mid Production Barrel Travel Lock for my tank. I have the mounts (A) and the arms (B) (Lower Picture) complete and I'm heating some water up to form the styrene cradle portion for the barrel. My question is and I think a collective group might aid me with this, What can I use to represent the chain that would clamp the barrel down?

Looks like a fun project.....I would start with the late model and work backwards....have you seen this kit?

Hey mustclime,

Thanks for the site, I saw that yesterday while seaching the net. I think the wife would castrate me if I spent $70 US for two sprues of chain links. Santa (Wife) just got me the Walterson Gearboxes and other goodies (I don't know about) so those things are out. Thanks again though and Merry Christmas.

As someone that is cutting and gluing 1200 track links for my e-100.....Your next step would be to make the chains yourself.......

Look at a bike chain, its just plates and and pins.....look for a good hobbie shop with lots of different types of styreen....


btw....I would not use heat to get those bends in the styreen....just roll the sheet up like a news paper and work it. You can get it to set in the bend you need....thats what I did with these .8mm sheet on the e100 fenders....

If you really want it to look right, spend some time getting the measurements right. Work in mm, fine out how thick the plate stock should be and get it into scale....the plates on my motorcycle chain are 5mm thick...devide by 16 and that .3mm thick.....find the right thickness plastic and figure out how big the links are. Get the width and cut a strip a little wider than that( for sanding).....then cut the links in the form of sections of the strip...I would cut twice the number you need to allow for fails.........I would then drill the holes for the pins and sand to shape....while you are the hobby shop, I would look for different sized rods( wire) for the pins and a good hobby drill as you are going to be drilling 2 holes for every link......by the looks of this....you are going to be making a lot of links....

my count is 5 sets of inner link at 5 plates per set and 5 and 4 set of outer plates at 6 plats per link.....thats 49 plates...

Looking at the schematics that I posted, the chain section looks really different from the Panther Travel Lock that Wecohe sells and that you posted. The Tiger one seems to be a single strand of chain. Your thoughts.

cut some beer cans to make the links. Pin assembly together.

Thunder Tiger and some other companies make RC motorcycles that use a real chain to drive the rear wheels. Don't know the scale, but that might work.

thinking about it, and i may be wrong. how about getting in touch with tamiya and seeing if you can get the sprue fom one of there bike kits? dont think it would flex but you can always try heating it. need to make a travel lock for my tiger and that was the bit that got me as well.
