Hi Andy
Big hello and welcome to the forum from deepest, darkest Kernow
You couldn`t have picked a better time to join the hobby, so much great stuff is coming out on a nearly daily basis now we really are spoilt for choice
At the moment my R/C tank collection is split between (mostly) 1/16 and also 1/8 and 1/6, here`s what I reckon to them all, hope this might give you a few pointers when you come to buying your first tank:
1/16 Torro King Tiger, Professional Metal edition - 90 percent metal, superb fine detailing and paint job, fantastic indoor/outdoor runner, also comes with a wooden presentation/transport case. IR battle version with RX18 MFU fitted. My favourate 1/16 tank at the moment
1/16 Taigen M41A3 Walker Bulldog - Metal tracks, metal sprockets/idlers, heavy duty metal gearboxes plus custom paint job. Another good indoor/outdoor runner, fitted with 6 mm BB gun and RX18 MFU. A sometimes over-looked model, which is a pity as these do have a lot going for them in terms of further scope for upgrades etc - mine is done out in the style of a Warhammer 40,000 fantasy gaming tank just to be different!
1/16 Heng Long Type 99(A) MBT -Bog standard at the moment, but will be getting the usual metal upgrades in due course. That said, is a superb runner as is, very impressive size wise (bigger than my KT) and once again the level of detail straight from the box is spot on. Fitted with 6 mm BB gun and RX18 MFU. Probably joint favourate
1/16 Heng Long Pz IV F1, Custom Edition - Metal tracks, metal sprockets/idlers, metal suspension and heavy duty metal gearboxes plus custom DAK paint job. Great little runner once again, and a similar superb level of fine detail. Fitted with 6 mm BB gun and RX13 boards. I would say these make a superb first choice if you are looking to get into the hobby, as plenty of scope to upgrade or generally just tinker with!
1/16 (Heng Long donor chassis) Stug III - bought this as a one-off from a chap on ebay, has pretty much every metal upgrade available at the time fitted! Stunning level of detail, great little tank to drive. Fitted with a high intensity LED (muzzle flash simulater) and RX13 boards.
All of the above are smoke and sound, and have (with the exception of the Stug III), one or more working lights.
Now the big stuff (might want to wait a few years before considering this lot!):
Mark-1-tank 1/8 Tiger I Late Model - GRP hull/turret, metal sprockets/idlers/roadwheels, metal tracks, metal muzzle brake, brass barrel liner, metal drivers/bow gunner hatches and metal engine deck parts. Two 250 Watt electric motors with chain drives. Fitted with pyrotechnic gunfire simulator, LED for coax MG and smoke generator, plus full sound and water proofed electronics. The dogs danglers!
Model Works 1/6 M5A1 Stuart light tank - Again this is a bit of a one-off, as is fitted out with the MFU/DMD units from a Tamiya M26 Pershing, so sounds great! Had the turret interior built in by the previous owner, and I have fitted loads of Armorpax fine detail parts!
Hope all this helps, and welcome to the pleasure dome once again
