RC 2 HL Adaptor

Post by Tankbear »

Hi guys, bought a RC2HL adaptor from RCTankAustralia shop a month ago and finally got it to work with a 2.4ghz radio so now doing a little review for you all.

First up I will point out I'm not experienced in anyway with regard to hobby radios, hence why first radio I tried didn't work :{ and took a month to get one which did work.

Here's what you get.

The way this adaptor works is you connect a 4 channel (or more) receiver to the RC2HL (see above) and then the RC2HL to the RX13, 14, 18 by simply switching the HL receiver lead to the RC2HL. Like this.

Simply enough? Well there is no instructions which come with it, not an issue if your ok with hobby radio gear for me with no knowledge it means double checking the leads are the correct way round etc. If in doubt check out the RCTA forum which has lots of pictures and diagrams.

Next problem is not every radio works for the hassle I had I can only recommend buying a radio which is known to work (listed on product page when you buy the adaptor). For info I can tell you Planet T7 with either R6M or R7M receiver does not work.

Final issue is connecting the 4 channels correctly between the RC2HL and receiver and finding the correct normal or reverse for each channel. That one is a going to be a bit of trial and error as each radio is different.

One last thing is because your new radio doesn't have a start, machine gun, or K button these are mixed into the control sticks. For example start is left thumb stick down and right. Machine gun is left stick fully down and gun elevation is left stick half down. K button is left stick up.

So having got through all the setting up. How does it work? Well great, tank is as is with a HL controller but now you have the advantage of better range and no interference so should work great where there is great number of other RC vehicles. Plus it is only a 30 second job to switch between tanks which means one controller for all your tanks presuming you only use one at a time.

Hi Ian,
It sounds like an excellent piece of kit, the man who created that is clearly VERY clever and knowledgeable about electronics ......but the operation of the starter and the MG sound like they will take a bit of getting used to 8O .......I must admit that it would be very nice to have a totally separate Remote Control unit that could be used on other projects.....

Hi Alb,

Yes Kevin the creator is talented with electronics (also did MAKO board, Anti Track Recoil Circuit, Pot head, plus more to come) but on this occasion some credit needs to go to the original german creator (sorry can't remember his name) as he is producing the chips with all the code on for Kevin to use.

As for the controls it isn't that hard to get use to them, the elevation is probably the hardest as you keep jambing the stick too far down and getting the machne gun instead. Plus I think Tamiya tanks with a 4 channel radio use the same kind of arrangement to turn lights on etc.

But I think biggest advantage of the adaptor is for people who go to tank meets as you can't run that many HL tanks as most are on crystal 1 or 2! and even when on different crystal still get problems.

Tankbear
shortly I will be posting the how to do it in detail. I think the RC2HL and mako system is so good I am putting my money up and bringing in several sets to sell to Canadian and North American tankers. My goal is not to make a ton of money but really to open this hobby up.
There are a few places where you can get product and I don't intend on competing with them.

I do intend to show people how much fun you can have in a battle with another person. The more tankers we have the better our product becomes and the greater the choices we get.

fyi Version 2 of the Mako has some cool updates in it. I'm on pins and needles waiting for the boards to get here.

Hi Freakydude

That is fantastic news about selling sets to tankers, like you say bring affordable upgrades to the already reasonable priced HL tanks which are backed up with loads of 3rd party upgrades can only be a good thing. Why pay silly money for a Tamiya when you could have a battling HL tank at a fraction of the cost.

Yep, Kevin mentioned the functions of the next Mako release. It just gets better, now with functions Tamiya & ElMod don't have :D
